We will take the time to research and interact with these qualifications, rather than building a standard around Euro-Western qualifications alone. Our Approach: We acknowledge the ways that colonialism, anti-Blackness, ableism, cis-centrism, transmisogyny, and homophobia structure the distribution of power, capital, and opportunities in so-called Canada and at Carleton University. Each year, we review proposals with an initial reply by August 30, with the aim to conduct peer review of proposals of expressed interest by the end of October. mediastudies.press is an open-access publisher for the media and communication studies fields. The press is nonprofit and scholar-led. We publish living works, with iterative updates stitched into our process. And we encourage multi-modal submissions that reflect the mediated environments our authors study. Publishing with mediastudies.press is free on principle. Our aim is to demonstrate, on a small scale, an open-access publishing model supported by libraries rather than author fees, via the Open Book Collective. Open access for readers, we believe, should not be traded for new barriers to authorship. All our published works are rigorously peer-reviewed, and receive unusual editorial attention. We prioritize discoverability through careful metadata, library records, and directory listings. As a scholar-run operation, our publicity outreach is uncommonly informed by the fields? intellectual contours. The special issue is the result of the SSHRC-sponsored project Beyond Verification, led by the Digital Democracies Institute at Simon Fraser University, with participation by scholars from Canada and around the world. This Special Issue explores the stakes of authenticity (and its artifices) in the post-truth era. The papers included in this Special Section show how authenticity is the result of the complex processes of technical infrastructures, intensities of engagement, user experiences, and cultural practices. It addresses the orchestration of mis/disinformation through techno-cultural and techno-affective flows that combine network trackers with emotional bursts, algorithmic recommendations with national fantasies, and collective wounds and trauma with a desire for belonging. It investigates the distinction between veracity and authenticity, revealing where fact-checking fails and how dis/misinformation spreads through data and its networked infrastructures, by deploying methodologies from digital methods to media theory, and from large-scale content analysis to speculative and participatory methods. The Special Section highlights how a diversity of approaches to affect and authenticity furthers the study of mis- and disinformation by highlighting the various intersections between perceptions, communities, and disclosures. It also stresses how different methods can approach these questions while existing in tension with each other, from quantitative and mixed-methods approaches to theoretical examinations. Edited by Ursula Huws, Catherine McKercher, Nicole Cohen and Leslie Regan Shade, the issue contains 30 articles, many by CCA community members, that demonstrate the relevance of Vincent Mosco?s concepts and framework for understanding the new world order. Articles in this special issue explore Mosco's remarkable intellectual legacy: his theoretical innovations in political economy, including his foundational role in the development of the political economy of communication; his contributions to teaching, research, mentorship and praxis; his material analysis of media labour; his identification of risks associated with digitalisation; his prescience about the implications of AI; and his focus on the need to imagine concrete utopias as ways to make a better world. The issue is open access and all articles are free to read. We hope this issue will be helpful in your research and teaching. First: projects of digital twinning that aim to create virtual replicas of Earth, such as the European Commission?s Destination Earth, NVIDIA?s Earth-2, and, at a national scale, Imagining Canada?s Digital Twin. Second: cohabitation of other planets from NASA?s Artemis program for Mars to the tech oligarchy?s visions of abandoning Earth and beginning anew elsewhere in the Solar System. Twinning Earth is a one-day workshop organized at the University of Toronto on October 6. We are inviting contributions, which examine and theorize the stakes of twinning Earth both digitally and in livable habitats on distant planets. What technologies, techniques and cultural contexts are required to make doubles of Earth? What values and priorities animate computational efforts to make Earth livable as the climate crisis intensifies? What techno-futures are envisioned in grand ambitions of transforming hostile outer space environments into Earth-like habitats? The workshop is organised by Tero Karppi (UofT), Hanna E. Morris (UofT), and Michael Richardson (UNSW Sydney) and supported by the Jackman Humanities Institute?s Program for Arts. The workshop takes place in-person at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada, prior to the annual science and technology studies 4S Conference. To maximise the collaborative potential of the workshop, participants will distribute max 2,000 word papers two weeks prior to the event, which they will then speak to in collaborative, discussion-focused panels. Papers can be loose drafts rather than polished works, with the aim of using feedback at the workshop to develop full papers for potential inclusion in a special issue, with an appropriate journal to be determined based on draft contributions. Supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the project aims to make its trove of data as accessible as possible. Designed to help researchers, policymakers, journalists, and the public explore trends in media ownership and digital platform dominance and to create customized, comparative visualizations, the dashboard is now loaded with even more data from the 36 countries covered by the project. Covering more than 20 industry sectors - from mobile wireless, PayTV and streaming video and music services to search engines, internet advertising, app store distribution, and more - the dashboard allows you to create snapshot views, such as the top 10, 20 or 30 media companies in the world or country-by-country, or to rank the largest national media economies by revenue. The data spans decades so you can also chart the evolution of particular industries and markets across time. [image.png] We have also produced a library of continually updated reports - available here - written by some of the foremost researchers in the field. They are widely cited in the scholarly literature and have been used, for example in the recent challenge to Paramount's bid to acquire Warner Bros Discovery by California and other state attorneys general across the United States. Please check out these resources and do get in touch with us if you have any specific inquiries.
