Here is the link to the special issue and its PDF version: https://www.ama.org/2020/06/22/call-for-papers-journal-of-public-policy-marketing-marketing-based-initiatives-to-prevent-radicalization/. JPP&M is a reputable and highly ranked journal, which is published by Sage and the American Marketing Association (AMA). This journal is also associated with its own conference ?Marketing and Public Policy Convention? taking place every June in Washington DC. For this special issue, we plan to organize a special session at the 2021 Winter AMA (Feb 19-21, Florida). It is a pre-approved special session and we need a couple of presentations. We need an extended abstract (700) words by the end of July 2020. Should you want to present at the special issue, I would need a firm Yes now. But you would only be required to send the abstract by the end of July. Scope: In light of current issues (e.g., global response to Mr. George Floyd?s murder), the special issue and special section are very inclusive and deal with a wide range of topics such as racism, hate, and intolerance (i.e., white supremacist groups), and how this filters into other aspects of society through a marketing lens (cf. the paragraph I cc-d). So the objective is to include papers as part of an overarching effort to understand how to reduce hate, intolerance, racism, oppression, and injustice. ?In line with JPP&M's vision (Martin & Scott, 2020), the general purpose of this special section is to ?invite? marketing scholars to join this discussion, and to show to policy makers the vital role that marketing could play in preventing radicalization, and in reducing its related outcomes (such as hate, intolerance, racism, oppression, and injustice)?. For instance, research that documents the current global movement against racism toward black communities would be a good fit with this special section. A second related issue is disinformation (i.e., ?fake news? or propaganda). We need to better understand how disinformation can contribute to consumer radicalization by fueling hate toward some groups (Schwarz & Holnburger, 2019). By feeding on public insecurities (e.g., racial tension, immigration or cultural differences), this type of inflammatory content can promote inaccurate beliefs about some groups, thus creating a culture of fear, hate and revenge (Gr?goire et al. 2010; Stein 2019). This type of information may, in turn, have an effect on how members of those communities are perceived in the marketplace, where they go shopping and what these people consume, (e.g., Alkayyali, 2019; Pittman, 2017). -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Just as anti-Black racism has shaped legal and political structures leading to continued discrimination, so too has it impacted the design, creation, and application of technologies. Specifically, surveillance technologies have become central tools for policing. When these tools are deployed in the criminal justice system, their use can further institutionalize discrimination and oppression. The Citizen Lab is also aware that the information security community has long standing problems with diversity. These problems cannot be allowed to continue unchallenged and we stand firmly in solidarity with calls for structural changes to correct this course. In the absence of deeply integrated and meaningful representation across a spectrum of communities and experiences, we risk perpetuating systemic racism in our own work. We also miss out on creativity, talent, and opportunities to make progress on some of our world?s most pressing problems. As an academic institution focused on the advancement of human rights within the technological sphere, we are committed to addressing systemic racism and inequality while also making our own space more representative of the communities we serve. To better achieve these goals, we are pleased to announce a fellowship program on issues related to surveillance, digital security, and race. To address the lack of diversity in the information security research community this fellowship is for applicants who identify as Black (including Black Africans and people of African heritage from the Caribbean, North America, and Latin America) Application Deadline July 27 2020, 11 PM EST https://citizenlab.ca/2020/06/citizen-lab-fellowship-surveillance-digital-security-and-race/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Postdoctoral Researcher I (Grade 8: ?41,526 ? ?49,553 p.a; fixed term contract until 30 June 2022 in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal thereafter) 2. Postdoctoral Researcher II (Grade 8: ?41,526 ? ?49,553 p.a; fixed-term for 7 months in the first instance, with the strong possibility of renewal thereafter) The deadline to apply for these positions is 12.00 midday on 27 August 2020. We?re also hiring for multiple research assistant positions ? see more here. About Fairwork Fairwork is an action-research project based at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford. We research working conditions in the gig economy, in order to develop ?fairness ratings? for digital labour platforms like Uber, Helpling and Deliveroo (see examples here). We use these ratings as a lever to improve pay and conditions for platform workers, through media and consumer pressure. Fairwork?s programme of action research intends not just to understand the world, but to change it. By bringing workers, platforms, scholars, labour researchers and policymakers to the table, we work to collaboratively develop and embed principles of fair work into the script of the gig economy. Fundamental to the project is a commitment to being participatory and non-hierarchical within our communities: we are all?workers, unions, platforms, regulators, academics?the experts, and we all have co-developed this project. Our ultimate aim is to understand, and counter, some of the forces that disempower gig workers across the world. Over the past three years, we have mobilized a unique and growing transnational network of social justice minded scholars from over ten countries in pursuit of this planetary goal. In order to effectively advocate for gig workers everywhere, we believe it necessary for our team too to reflect a diversity of backgrounds, cultures, perspectives and more. In growing our team, we value and welcome the unique contributions that applicants can bring in terms of their education, opinions, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, ethnicity, race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, national origin, age, religion, disability, and beliefs. We actively strive to build and nurture a culture of empathy, inclusiveness, and respect. About the Postdoctoral Researchers The ideal candidates will have: * A postgraduate degree in sociology, geography, economics, law, development, or related fields; * Academic or professional experience and specialist knowledge relating to the gig economy, platform work, the digital economy, decent work, or precarious/temporary work; * Excellent project management skills, including the ability to develop and execute granular work schedules and coordinate diverse stakeholders; and, * Excellent communication abilities, including the ability to write for diverse audiences, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings. See details of essential and desirable applicant criteria in the full job descriptions (Postdoctoral Researcher I and Postdoctoral Researcher II). The team welcomes applications that reflect diverse modes of knowledge production and traditions of scholarship. Structure and Primary Responsibilities As the successful candidate for one of the positions of Postdoctoral Researcher, you will be based at Fairwork Foundation within the Oxford Internet Institute. You will be a core part of a team led by Professor Mark Graham, and will play a key role in conducting research and guiding the Fairwork partners in the research that they conduct. You will be based at the University of Oxford, and will work with partners in Brazil, Bangladesh, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, South Africa, and the UK. The primary aims of this position will be to: * Conduct research with platform workers and platform managers about job quality on digital labour platforms; * Use that research as part of action research strategies to leverage change in the gig economy; * Play a coordination role with some of the project?s international partners; and, * Collaborate on publications and research outputs to disseminate the evaluations of platforms against principles of fair work. Duration of Posts These posts are available immediately. The post of Postdoctoral Researcher I is fixed-term until 30 June 2022 in the first instance with the possibility of renewal thereafter. The post of Postdoctoral Researcher II is fixed-term for 7 months in the first instance with the strong possibility of renewal thereafter. Deadline For both Postdoctoral Researcher positions, only online applications received before 12.00 midday on 27 August 2020 will be considered. Interviews for those shortlisted will take place on 11 September 2020. To be considered for both positions, please submit applications for both calls. Learn more about and apply for the positions of Postdoctoral Researcher I and Postdoctoral Researcher II. Contact If you have any questions about these roles, please email info at fair.work. The Fairwork project endorses the wider call from the Oxford Internet Institute community to advance anti-racist initiatives in higher education. We commit to upholding the values it espouses in our recruitment processes, to the best of our capacities. ------------------------------------------ Mark Graham Director, Fairwork www.fair.work Professor, University of Oxford www.markgraham.space New books: Graham, M. The conference, which is being held virtually this year, is currently underway. As a way to introduce ourselves to other great academic communities, we like to invite you to explore this year?s presentations before they are gone. The presentations are groups into ten broad tracks: 1: Bots, Bad Actors, Anti-social 2: Digital Methods 3: Discourse and Public Opinion 4: Health & Wellbeing 5: Marketing & Outreach 6: Misinformation 7: Online & Offline Communities 8: Politics 9: Privacy, Security, Trust 10: Use & Users The full list of presentations is available at https://socialmediaandsociety.org/smsociety-presentations-2020/ We have also made the Featured Panel on ?Diverse Voices: Promises and Perils of Social Media for Diversity? available at https://socialmediaandsociety.org/2020/smsociety2020-how-to-participate/. The panel tackles many of the pressing questions that society is grappling with, including: * Can human society handle the connection of diverse and divergent (often conflicting) voices on social media? Is empowering every voice via social media a net good? * Under what conditions can social media build bridges across differences? When does social media reinforce division? Background about the conference: The 2020 International Conference on Social Media & Society (#SMSociety) is an annual gathering of social media researchers from around the world. It is the premier venue for sharing and discovering new peer-reviewed interdisciplinary research on how social media platforms impact society. Organized by the Social Media Lab at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University, #SMSociety provides participants with opportunities to exchange ideas, present original research, learn about recent and ongoing studies, and network with peers. This year?s conference is convened in partnership with colleagues from DePaul University College of Communication, Studio Chi and the College of Computing and Digital Media in Chicago. -- Anatoliy Gruzd, Conference chair On behalf of the 2020 #SMSociety Organizing Committee https://socialmediaandsociety.org/about/ ask at socialmediaandsociety.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We will meet monthly via Zoom, see details below, or here: www.artefactlab.ca/paperology Cordialement, Ghislain CALL FOR PARTICIPATION The Paperology Reading and Activity Group will take place during the 2020-2021 academic year. While the most common of everyday materials, paper has received less critical attention than it deserves. The objective for this group is to engage with the emerging research and growing literature on paper as material. In working towards an expansive approach to paper, we are less invested in what is on the page than we are in the page itself (Stamm, 2018). Instead, we want to better understand the material histories, forms, practices, and possibilities of paper. Paper has been of interest to artists, art historians, and book historians, but it has been surprisingly under examined as media and technology from the broader perspective of fields such as media and communication studies. The recent surge of publications on paper reflects an effort to fill this gap. This includes research on paper as substrate (Dworkin, 2015; Calhoun, 2020); environmental stories of papermaking through case studies of the pulp and paper mill industry (Baxter, 2020); works interested in the phenomenologies and affective experiences of paper (Michelon, 2016; Barnes, 2017); considerations of artefacts and practices that accompany paper (Garvey, 2013; Robertson, 2019; Senchyne, 2020)??and much more. The Paperology RAG will be engaging with paper as material through a variety of literatures that consider how paper is made, how it is used, and the practices it affords. This includes thinking through an assortment of paper-based artefacts with texts from various disciplines. As a way to start, we offer the following questions: What exactly is paper? What experiences are unique to paper? In what ways is paper valuable? Why paper now? Is paper still a relevant technology? How has paper in its various permutations given rise to specific things, systems, and cultures, including certain formats and genres (e.g. the pocket book, the file, the greetings card), artefacts (e.g. the rolodex, the paper shredder), and activities (e.g. paperwork, burning, scrapbooking, marbling)? As we move through the readings, questions such as these will serve as signposts to foster a space for exploration, for engaging with novel ways of thinking paper, and for formulating new questions around media and materiality. We will meet monthly to discuss readings organized around themes, which might include: history; ecology; infrastructure; bureaucracy; sorting and storing; destroying; ephemera; value; intimacy; the senses; cutting up; aesthetics; labour; gender; or others. The reading list for each month will be a book-length collection of articles, chapters, or short works. An indicative bibliography is included below, but we will confirm the schedule, including themes and readings, in light of participants? expressed interests. LOGISTICS * We meet once a month on a Thursday from 11:00am ? 1:00 pm EST, from September 2020 to April 2021. Exact dates are: September 24, October 29, November 19, December 17, January 21, February 18, March 18, April 22. * We meet synchronously via Zoom; you?ll get a link to our individual meetings via email. * This is an informal, seminar-style reading group where we aim to foster an open and collegial discussion. We would like to create a sustained conversation over the year so would appreciate your ongoing participation, but not to worry if you can?t attend all the weeks. * We hope you?ll have a chance to read and come prepared to chat. If you don?t get a chance to read, you?re still welcome to come listen in. * We welcome working papers as part of our reading list if you?d like to discuss your work-in-progress. For those who are interested in engaging with paper through making, activities will be suggested throughout the year, including DIY projects or site-visits for those in Montreal. * We welcome researchers and research-creators from diverse backgrounds. * In order to finalize the schedule please send us a bit of information about yourself (100 words is plenty): your current affiliation, your general area of research, and why the interest in paper. Please let us know if there is a theme, reading, and/or activity you are particularly interested in or would like to suggest, and if you would like to present your own work or practice or lead an activity. URL: From c2evans at ryerson.ca Mon Aug 17 15:43:54 2020 From: c2evans at ryerson.ca (Calla Evans) Date: Mon, 17 Aug 2020 17:43:54 -0400 Subject: [acc-cca-l] CFP: Fat Studies in Canada: (Re)Mapping the Field Message-ID: [?EXTERNAL] Fat Studies in Canada: (Re)Mapping the Field Edited By: Allison Taylor, Kelsey Ioannoni, Sonia Meerai, Calla Evans, Amanda Scriver, May Friedman This edited collection will focus on the growing field of fat studies, specifically the emergence of fat studies theorists, academics, artists, and community activists in the colonial project known as Canada. As a field of research, fat studies criticizes dominant framings of fatness, particularly those of ?obesity? or an ?obesity epidemic?, for the ways in which they marginalize fat bodies. Instead, fat studies seeks to understand the ways in which fatness functions simultaneously as a material experience and a cultural construct, with the aim of challenging?and ultimately dismantling? the fat oppression that is pervasive in contemporary Western cultures. Accordingly, fat studies takes a non-pathologizing approach to fatness, positing fatness as a form of human diversity and as a politicized embodiment and, therefore, offering a critical theoretical framework for identifying, analyzing, and resisting fat oppression. In critically examining attitudes around weight, fat studies argues that our knowledge of weight needs to be understood in an intersectional fashion, as weight cannot be understood without acknowledging the way people are situated in multiple forms of marginalization and oppression, embracing an intersectional approach to understanding fatness. Indeed, fat studies must consider how gender, race, class, disability, and other axes of oppression impact cultural ideas about, and individual and group embodied experiences of fatness. While fat studies has been criticized for being U.S. (United States) centric, the field is growing in Canada, with scholars producing rich contributions to the field. With its focus on Canada, this edited book acknowledges that borders are a colonial construct and, therefore, posits Canada as an imagined space with real, material impacts on marginalized lives. As a settler society, in which the pathologization of body shape and size diversity plays a central role in the imposition and maintenance of white supremacy, it is especially urgent to consider fatness in a Canadian context. Indeed, it is imperative that analyses of fatness in a Canadian context consider the colonial and white supremacist nature of fatphobia because of the ways in which Canadian institutions such as policing target and enact violence against Indigenous, Black, and Brown bodies. It is within the context of an emergent fat studies field in Canada that we position this edited collection. This edited book thus looks to map the current state of fat studies in Canada, with particular focus on gendered analyses of fatness. In highlighting Canadian fat studies scholarship, we aim to chart the unique ways that scholars in Canada are troubling and thickening the larger fat studies literature. Possible Topics Include: - The landscape of/positioning fat studies in Canada - Gender and fatness (femininities, masculinities, non-binary and trans genders) - Indigenous and decolonial approaches to fat studies and Canada - Race, racism, white supremacy, and fatness - Disability and crip approaches to fatness - Fatness and sexuality - Fatness and age/ing - Fatness, class, and poverty in the Canadian landscape - Axes of privilege and oppression with fatness - Canadian public policies, legislation, campaigns, and messaging relating to body shape, size, and weight - The medicalization of fatness in Canada - Fat activism in Canada: past, present, and future - Canadian media representations of fatness - mothering, fathering, and parenting and fatness in Canada - Fatness in the community - Variations in experiences of fat and size (i.e. superfats) - Respectability politics - Reconceptualizing ?health? - Fatness and COVID-19 We welcome additional ideas for submissions! Abstracts considering the intersection of fatness with other marginalized identities will be prioritized, as will submissions that shed light on underrepresented experiences. We invite people to submit academic articles, stories, alternative forms of narration, illustrations, poetry, and other art works that highlight issues relating to fat studies in Canada. Abstracts/Statement of Interest - Due Monday August 31st 2020 Please submit an abstract (for academic work, up to 300 words) or explanation (up to 100 words) of your submission by August 31st 2020 to fatincanada2020 at gmail.com. Acceptances will be notified mid September 2020. Full drafts will tentatively be due December 2020. In recognizing the fraught and unprecedented nature of this current time surrounding COVID-19, if you are intending to submit but need more time (for either abstract or full submission), please let us know and we will do our best to work with your timeline. Particular attention is paid to the integration of EdTech with some of the most contentious developments of our time, including platformization and data-veillance, the automation of work and labor, and globalization-platform imperialism. By using a political economy of communication approach, this book will be of value to anyone interested in the current transformations of capitalism, the State, higher education and online learning in the digital age. Conclusion: A Pedagogy for Technological Citizenship, a Pedagogy for the Precariat Working Class Reviews "Recent decades have seen a sustained political assault on education, stripping it of its wider social purpose and reducing it to a personal investment and instrumental training for work. The progressive application of digital technologies have played a central role in redefining teaching and learning. Based on a very clear political economy of communications framework, the authors of this book demonstrate in detail how innovations have served the wider neo-liberal reorganisation of contemporary capitalism. Anyone concerned with the construction of the future needs to read it and respond." -- Graham Murdock, Loughborough University and Vice President of the International Association of Communication and Media Research (IAMCR) "This book offers a unique and timely study of the interrelationships between digital platform industries and higher education. It breaks new ground by providing a critical analysis of the latest information-communication technological trends in higher education from a political economy approach" -- Marko Ampuja, Tampere University and University of Helsinki ? Suite du calendrier : Retour aux auteurs : d?but d?cembre 2020 Remise des articles (35 000 signes) : pour d?but juin 2021 Processus d??valuation Parution au 1er semestre 2022 ______________________________________________ English version Edited by Katharina Niemeyer and Val?rie Schafer Although the topics of memory and archives have given rise to considerable cross-disciplinary interest, the issue of storage ? of media content, information, data, documents and objects, as well as the use of stored content ? has received less attention. In particular, and more specifically in French speaking scholarly work, research has rarely viewed the question of storage in conjunction with the related long-term practices. This special issue therefore intends to explore three strands ? the storage of media content, storage media, and the use of stored content? and links between them. Whether on an individual or collective, professional or institutional level, we want to investigate these questions from a long-term media history perspective, going back for example to the republication of articles in gazettes, the emergence of news agencies in the 19th century, Scott de Martinville?s phonautograph, the paleophone invented by Cros ? even the introduction of the legal deposit by French King Francis I and the volumen and codex (Lagu?s, Beaudoin and Chapoutier, 2017). The related issues of flows and persistence also merit analysis (Merzeau, 2009). The history of storage is often limited to a linear, technical genealogy of storage media ? and one that remains patchy. Recent research has looked at pre-digital storage (Priestley and Haigh in Haigh, 2019) and the transition from analogue to digital methods (punched tape, magnetic drum, cathode ray tube). There is also a tendency to focus on recent history, despite the fact that the archiving of the ?self?, the shoebox filled with private documents (Van Dick, 2005) and many other practices encourage us to go back further, to pre-digital or even pre-contemporary periods. Moreover, the translation into French (Parrika, 2017) of What is media archeology ? (Parrika, 2013) demonstrates the value and importance of alternative approaches (and their international circulation) that complement these technical, linear, innovation-centred genealogies (Pel? and Pisano, 2016 ; Thibault and Trudel, 2015). The approaches and theories ? now known as media archaeology ? that emerged in Germany in the 1980s and 1990s within cultural and technical science (Kittler, 1985), and also in France with mediology, charted a path between the notions of ?organised matter? and ?materialised organisation? (Debray, 1991 ; Merzeau, 2006). Although they have encouraged new perspectives, as yet they have generally failed to explore private, personal practices and/or the emotions caught up in ?storage media? and their links with our memories (Jacques, 2020 ; Magaudda and Minniti, 2019). This journal issue therefore intends to explore the question of storage from a socio-technical perspective, in particular from the angle of media practices (Kirschenbaum, 2008 ; Paci, 2015), in a bid to shed new light on the topic via a use-based approach, focusing on how stored content (images, audio footage, information and codes) is handled, retooled, improved, intermediated and recycled. While undoubtedly sometimes a trivial activity, in many respects the storage and ?mnemonic reactivation? of content raise key issues that help us understand how society relates to media production, information and data, while also clarifying our own relationship with memory and historiography. From the practice of storing our own data on a USB drive, external disk or ?cloud? to the storage of information by organisations and institutions for vital economic, geopolitical and legal reasons, the question of storage encompasses both individual and collective, ?amateur? and professional practices. What interests us here is the transformation or co-existence of these practices over time (from juke boxes to audio cassettes to MP3s, from VHS to VOD, not forgetting DVDs and Blu-rays, from floppy disks and CD-Roms to the cloud), their ever-increasing capacities, the broadening notion of heritage and its digital forms (Bachimont, 2017 ; Treleani, 2017), the recycling of content (collage, redistribution, mashup, etc.) and the question of obsolescence (information transfer and also emulation and data loss). This special issue encourages a long-term perspective. It welcomes proposals that fall within the following broad areas (or look at a subject linking them) : (1) Media and storage : theoretical and historiographical approaches ? Media archaeology, media philosophy, studies on intermediality, memory or mediology as theories or methods that shine a light on forgotten or disregarded storage media by linking them to questions related to storage, practices and designers ? Theoretical reflections on society?s relationship with storage, taking particular account of the (sometimes hidden) challenges of archiving, heritagisation and data management (2) Storage of media content ? Storage practices (mnemonics) and uses and their development over time (family photographs, collections of objects, the transition between and (simultaneous) use of analogue and computer storage, etc.) ? The social, technical and economic history of specific storage media (from phonograph cylinders, audio and video cassettes, microfilms, punched cards and magnetic tape to data centres, including, for example, CD-Roms, USB drives, hard disks, scanners, MP3, etc.), whether individually or comparatively ? Storage and archiving of media material (the history of institutions like the French National Audiovisual Institute (INA) ; storing music on audio cassettes, in MP3 format, etc. ; storing home videos, etc.) ? Historical case studies about information storage ecosystems (3) Production and use of stored content and information ? Our emotional bond with storage as a means of saving and sharing information, and also as a skill, a form of amateur and professional bricolage ? Reusing stored media content (rebroadcasting programmes, reusing archive images, remixing, collage, mashups, etc.) ? Using stored information (from the early days of the press to data journalism) ? The development of professions and professionals in the area of information storage Submission Please send an abstract of 500 to 650 words, together with a title, a short bibliography and a biography (not included in the word count), jointly to Katharina Niemeyer : niemeyer.katharina at uqam.ca and Val?rie Schafer : valerie.schafer at uni.lu by 6 November 2020. Originally lauded as inherently democratic, social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook are now condemned as negligent outlets answerable for "post-truth" politics. An often unspoken assumption is that providing correct information will solve broader problems. Tellingly, however, the 2016 US presidential election was described both as "the authenticity election" and as normalizing ?fake news?: the more certain politicians lie, the more authentic they appear. Central to the study of mis- and disinformation are thus questions of how and under what circumstances?social, cultural, historical, and technical?information is deemed ?truthful,? ?factual,? or ?authentic,? when the concepts are related but not interchangeable. What is the role of authenticity in understanding why mis- and disinformation become accepted or meaningful for people? How does authenticity relate to other key concepts, such as truth, fact, and accuracy? What other key words or concepts are necessary, and yet perhaps undertheorized, in the study of information disorder and democracy? This workshop invites responses that interrogate the centrality of authenticity to the viral spread of mis- and disinformation, as well as the relationship of authenticity to other key concepts such as ?truth,? ?fact,? ?trust,? and/or ?veracity.? We encourage responses that take on one or more of these key words or phrases (or others) and investigate their role in propagating or countering mis- and disinformation. The full call for papers can be found here and we are seeking brief proposals on the following considerations: * How you might define authenticity * How you propose to study authenticity * Why and how authenticity matters to understanding mis- and disinformation * The relationship of authenticity to other key concepts such as ?truth,? ?fact,? ?trust,? and/or ?veracity? (or others you might suggest) Please submit your proposals by September 9 and include the following information to mdapplications at ssrc.org, with ?Application for Authenticity Workshop? in the subject line: * Current C.V. of the author who will participate in the workshop (maximum two pages). * An abstract of up to 250 words. Likely, HMC will be further routinized in the post-pandemic world, altering human lifestyles, offering an alternative to face-to-face communication between humans, meeting demands for independent or remote work, necessitating teaming with communicable devices or robots, and providing context for the development of human-like friendships with AI partners. This special issue focuses on strategic human-machine communication that contributes to overcoming difficulties caused by a pandemic and addressing the HMC-based New Normal based on human-machine communication during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Particularly, we welcome studies investigating the acceleration of the diffusion of human-machine communication as a communicative solution for current and future pandemics and implementation of HMC as a new normal. Based on this general theme, this special issue aims to feature diverse circumstances of HMC related to pandemics, such as human-robot interaction, virtual and augmented realities (humans ?in? the machine or machine environments), cyborg/augmentics (human-machine hybridity), human-machine teaming, and automation, and to be inclusive of multiple methodological, epistemic, and disciplinary approaches. This special issue strives to advance HMC scholarship internationally by encouraging excellence in academic research. (2008 : 7). Colyar ?crivait ainsi : ? because writing is generative ?; ? because writing is a reflection of the rhetorical self ?; ? because writing is sense making ?; ? because writing is methodology ? (2009 : 425, 429, 431, 432). R?F?RENCES BIBLIOGRAPHIQUES Alcoff, Linda M. (1991-1992), ? The problem of speaking for others ?, Cultural Critique, (20) : 5-32. On the one hand, the growing distrust that technological risks bring to our environment and our health, and, on the other, the hope placed in that modern promise that only science and technology will give us all the answers and take us out of uncertainty. The changes in the relationship between experts and citizens show that tension and the socio-scientific controversies in the field of scientific-technological research are now the study objects in scientific-technological, health, and environmental research. It has been more than fifteen years since the World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva in 2003, where the representatives of the member States of United Nations announced the foundation of a society based on the exchange of knowledge, in which the multiplication of the information networks, digital literacy and the promised end of the digital divide would be the definitive factors to defeat poverty and ignorance. The unlucky prophecy predicted something else than broken promises. The ambivalence of the so-called information and knowledge society is clearly shown in the fact that, on the one side, the global horizons grow, communications speed up and more sophisticated technical devices are produced, but on the other, citizens have more tools to question them. We encounter citizens that criticize, resist, and actively look for new forms of participation or generation of knowledge when they face the scientific and technological developments that affect them. In a hyper-informed world, in which the once legitimate production of knowledge and the institutional figure of the expert is continuously questioned, (re)generating new and legitimate voices that dispute the formerly exclusive fields of knowledge, it becomes central to ask not only about the access to information but also about its uses for decision-making and in the different forms of citizen participation. The Public Communication of Science and Technology in controversies about scientific-technical developments in health or the environment is a privileged space to observe these disputed fields. The appearance of actors whose legitimacy does not come from the conventional validation mechanisms and the voices of different rationalities in the diverse communicational spaces come together in public debates where it is not only pertinent to question the legitimacy, but also the positioning, the links, and participation of citizens. In this call for papers, the Anuario Electr?nico de Estudios en Comunicaci?n Social ?Disertaciones? looks for original papers dealing with socio-scientific/socio-technological controversies in the fields of health and environment. This refers (not exclusively) to: * Socio-scientific controversies in health, especially those related to COVID-19 * Public Communication of Science and Technology models * Sustainable development * Social communication health campaigns, with attentive interest in study objects related to Coronavirus * Circulation and appropriation of knowledge: non-professional expert citizens * Environmental debates and sacrifice zones * Big development project in protected territories * The voices of experts * Communication and citizen participation The studies about socio-scientific and socio-technological controversies, especially in health and environment, have been great mines for knowledge production, particularly from the perspective of the Social Studies of Science and Technology (STS). However, this line of work has only partially penetrated the field of communication studies, especially in the Latin-American context. The Public Communication of Science and Technology models (deficit, dialogue, and participative) have drawn a line in which there is an undoubted need for further digging, especially with empiric research. This volume of Disertaciones seeks to help researchers from different disciplines, but with a particular focus in the field of communication, to keep contributing in this direction. Deadline to submit manuscripts: October 15th, 2020. Coordinated by Ver?nica Rocamora (veronica.rocamora at usach.cl) and Claudio Broitman (claudio.broitman at usach.cl), of the Santiago de Chile University. Papers for Volume 15, Issue 1 (Jan-Jun 2022) Functionally diverse, LGBT+, racialized or migrant people, as well as religious, cultural, national or ethnic minorities lack the privileges of the dominant social groups regarding their access to and control of media contents. Article 2.2 of the ?Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities? of United Nations defends that ?persons belonging to minorities have the right to participate effectively in cultural, religious, social, economic and public life?. Hartley (2012) points out that minorities face difficulties in their access to media and, as a result, they are not able to bring their own point of view into the public opinion, and even when access is achieved, the coverage they receive tends to be disappointing[1]. It cannot be forgotten the role of media, not only as information sources but also as creators of interpretation frames and as shapers of awareness. The analysis of these frames is not only pertinent but also necessary and fundamental in order to understand the representation of minorities that takes place in them, but also in order to demand the representation that these groups can produce about themselves and their environment with an autonomous media praxis. >From an intersectional perspective, these social categories are interrelated, and their own systems of oppression, domination or discrimination are combined and fed back, contributing to social inequality. Many questions arise here: What is the image depicted in media about minorities? Who and how is in charge of this representation? How are these stigmatized groups and minorities being tackled in media? Is it different the representation in traditional fiction and non-fiction formats and in the new transmedia hybrid formats? The present special issue is open to diverse proposals in which the representation of minorities in said formats, as well as in journalism and in audiovisual ones (television, photography, radio, transmedia?) is analyzed. This way, it is expected to dig into the question of whether the image offered by the new media system around these groups goes further than the well-known vicious circle that keeps underrepresentation and stigmatization. In this call for papers, the academic journal ?Disertaciones? is looking for original articles tackling communication about minorities and stigmatized groups. The next lines of research are suggested, although other proposals addressing the general issue are also welcome: * Representation, reception and media access of LGTB+ people. * Representation, reception and media access of functionally diverse people * Representation, reception and media access of religious minorities * Representation, reception and media access of migrant or racialized people * Representation, reception and media access of national or ethnic minorities * Representation, reception and media access of cultural minorities Deadline for the submission of manuscripts: January 15th, 2021. Articles accepted before the publication of the issue in January 2022 will be published as preprint in the web of the journal. Coordinated by Mar?a Marcos Ramos (mariamarcos at usal.es) y Beatriz Gonz?lez de Garay (bgonzalezgaray at usal.es), from the University of Salamanca (Spain). [1] Demands for broadcast access are based on a reflection theory of the media ? that is, that the media ought to reflect the plurality of different groups, politics or lifestyles that can be identified outside the media in social life. Many groups argue that their access to television is blocked and that as a result they are unable to establish their point of view into the public mind. The assumption often is that the blockage is caused by a more or les deliberate conspiracy by the media to exclude them. Even when access is achieved, ?minority groups? are often disappointed with the coverage they receive. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Inscriptions (obligatoires) : celat at uqam.ca R?sum? Photographies & Remix (https://ecrantotal.uqam.ca/) which will take place at the Universit? du Qu?bec ? Montr?al?s Centre de design from May 19 to June 20, 2021. TOTAL SCREEN TOTAL SCREEN will be the first Canadian exhibition of Jean Baudrillard?s photographic works following international showcases in Sydney (Museum of Contemporary Art, 1994), Paris (La Maison europ?enne de la photographie, 2001), Kassel (Kunsthalle Fridericianum, 2004), Los Angeles (Chateau Shatto, 2019), and Shanghai (The Power Station of Art, 2019). With the exhibition as the point of departure for an international symposium and multiple workshops that will offer interpretations of Baudrillard?s legacy in regard to our current relationship with images, it is in this unprecedented context that works by international artists Penelope Umbrico, Adam Basanta, and Mishka Henner will engage in dialogue with the philosopher?s photographs and provocative thinking. This call is intended to provide an opportunity for emerging visual artists to produce and exhibit an original artwork that responds to one of the themes of the exhibition. From animated gifs of design objects, selfies taken against the backdrop of architectural works, new perspectives made possible by drones, Instagram?s story filters or snapshots of everyday life reinvented, to all forms of visual recognition reinforced by artificial intelligence, the image is at the core of today?s social experience. Pervasive and inescapable, images merge and interact with one another to animate our lives. The potency of the image is also characterised by its auratic force ? its ability to allow us to perceive social situations or personal experiences, as well as its agency as an artefact in public space that raises questions regarding possibilities of our emancipation and restriction, (self-)surveillance, and manipulation. The primary purpose of the exhibition is to develop, disseminate and share critical insights about the image and the screen in the digital age, as well as about new practices in the distribution and consumption of images. Accompanied by Jean Baudrillard, whose ideas are complemented by an image-making practice of analogue photography and its digital extensions ? superimposing the virtuality of the screen onto the materiality of paper ? this exhibition will prompt its participants to confront questions that remain largely uninvestigated by the philosopher. Thus, the following themes and issues will be at the forefront of the exhibition?s critical reflection: * The agency of images (or their non-agency) * The screen and images through the lens of feminist, gender, and intersectional studies * The screen and images through the lens of epistemic decolonisation * Visual implosion, simulation, and singularity Selected artists will be awarded $1 500 CAD for the creation of their visual artworks which will be exhibited from May 19 to June 20, 2021 at the Universit? du Qu?bec ? Proposals must be sent by November 15, 2020 to ecrantotal at uqam.ca. Selection Criteria: * The work must be original and not have been presented in a previous (virtual) exhibition * (Critical) engagement with the themes of the exhibition, including dialogue with the selected artists, must be explicit in the proposal * The technical feasibility and timetable of the project -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
