Call for proposals: Through a series of Research Awards, the Digital Ecosystems Research Challenge aims to support research and innovative exploration into the impacts and uses of digital media during the 2019 Federal Election in Canada. This research can use any method(s), could involve tool development or licensing, and can focus on any relevant topic-area related to digital media and this election. Award recipients will join a collaborative effort to understand the digital ecosystem during this election. Recipients will receive access to digital and survey data which might otherwise be too difficult or costly to obtain for small research teams. Recipients will also receive funding to support research activities between July 2019 and February 2020. There are four award categories: $10 000, $25 000, $50 000, and $100 000. The number of awards in each category will vary depending on applications received. We hope to make 2-3 awards in the $100 000 category with greater numbers of awards in the other categories. All award categories include access to processed data which will be determined on a case by case basis. Available data sources include social media, online news, and web data detailing the media discourse in the lead up to and during the election as well as access to the results of an ongoing survey of voter behaviour and metered media consumption. Technical and research support to analyze these data will also be available. We are particularly interested in submissions that reimagine Stonewall through a decolonial/anti-colonial lens. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or symposium@torontoqueerfilmfest.com *Proposals are due Tuesday, July 23.* Sincerely, Jonathan Petrychyn (He/Him) PhD Candidate (ABD), Communication & Culture York University and Ryerson University jpetrychyn@gmail.com Symposium Coordinator, Toronto Queer Film Festival torontoqueerfilmfest.com --- CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS Stonewall 50: The Future of Global Queer Liberation Art & Media A symposium organized in conjunction with the Toronto Queer Film Festival November 7 ? 10 Proposal deadline: Tuesday, July 23. Submit proposals here. Confirmed plenary speakers: Jasbir Puar, with more TBA On Turtle Island, two key moments in 1969 are often cited as formative moments in the development of LGBTQ rights on the continent: the Stonewall Riots in New York, and the federal Criminal Code amendment in Canada that decriminalized certain privatized sexual acts, often articulated as the decriminalization of homosexuality. Because 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of these two moments, both the colonial states of the United States and Canada have been enacting their own commemorations that aim to fold these events into larger mythologies of a benevolent state granting rights to a fledgling minority. The Canadian Government has released a commemorative coin, World Pride is being held in New York City this year, and across Turtle Island pride organizations, film festivals, and other queer institutions ran largely by wealthy white cis gay male settlers are toeing the party line and repeating the same story about 2019 marking the 50th anniversary of the birth of the LGBTQ rights movement in Canada and the United States. We think this is bullshit. Recent work by activists and scholars, particularly the Anti-69 collective, have noted that the Criminal Code amendment did not, in fact, decriminalize homosexuality; instead, it made it legal to engage in sodomy and buggery in private, subsequently giving the state the political and judicial justification to crack down on these acts as they occurred in public. Likewise, trans sex workers like Miss Major continually remind us that the Stonewall Riots marked a moment when a group made up of largely sex workers and trans women of colour were tired of police raids on the bar and fought back against the state. In the aftermath of the 1969 Criminal Code Amendment and the Stonewall Riots, state violence against queers did not decline, as our governments would like us to believe today -- in fact, it only increased. We think it is time that this history, its mythologizing, and its whitewashing, needs to be reckoned with. In conjunction with the Toronto Queer Film Festival, we are seeking participants for a symposium on the theme of Stonewall 50 that aims to challenge the white settler mythologies of an LGBTQ rights movement and reassert the necessity of global queer liberation art and media practices in our current political times. As ever, TQFF?s mandate remains to decolonize queer and trans art and media histories and practices. This symposium seeks projects that embody the spirit of the legacy of the Stonewall riots against police violence and/or center a commitment to decolonizing queer and trans liberation histories, art, and media. We take the opportunity of the 50th anniversary of Stonewall to not only reflect on where we have been, but how we want to imagine queer and trans liberation art and media for the next 50 years. We are interested in contributions that think creatively about Stonewall, about the idea of being ?stonewalled? by the dominant cis white settler queer institutions. To evoke Sara Ahmed: has Stonewall stonewalled us? Has its centrality to our mythology and the whitewashing of its history obscured the material radical roots of the queer liberation movement and obscured the multiple ways queer movements have emerged around the globe? How can we reclaim spaces and art lost to homonormativity? How do we remember the legacy of Stonewall outside of ?progress? narratives? Things look very different now than they did a half-century ago, but what does progress mean? Is it a straight line or a pendulum? If things get ?better,? do they get better for everyone? We are interested in papers, workshops, roundtables, readings, performances that critically engage and reckon with - through media and the arts - the history of Stonewall as a brick-and-mortar institution, as a site of origins, as an idea that structures queer cultural imaginaries. We are also interested in proposals that envision the present and futures of queer and trans resistance and liberation movements. Topics could include, but are not limited to: - Decolonial and anti-colonial queer liberation media & art - Queer liberation art, media, and movements in the global south - DIY arts and criticism practices - Stonewall as a business and its historical trajectory from seedy queer hole in the wall to verifiable tourist attraction - AIDS/HIV, especially centered around current and historical intersectional care strategies - Disability activism and global queer liberation - ?Queering? the acronyms, troubling the presumed solidarity between lesbian, gay, trans, intersex, ace, queer, etc communities - Queer research creation and/or arts-based approaches to research and activism - Academic and cultural boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement (BDS) While papers, roundtables, workshops, and other typical academic conference formats are welcomed, we especially encourage more creative formats including but not limited to: arts-based research, poetry, performances, music, readings, and artist talks. As a symposium organized with a film festival, we are particularly interested in contributions that engage in some way with queer and trans media and/or art practices. As a grassroots organization embedded within our communities, the Toronto Queer Film Festival encourages contributions from folks across our community ? not just academics embedded within universities, but also independent scholars, activists, artists, community members, and other people with lived experience that would provide valuable perspectives to discussions on global queer liberation art and media. Everyone is welcome to apply. All participants will be paid and we will be offering a small travel bursary for those outside of southern Ontario. Please submit the following information via our online form by Tuesday, July 23 - Name - Institutional Affiliation (if applicable) - Presentation format (i.e. paper, roundtable, workshop, performance, etc) - Presentation title - 250 word abstract - Email address you can be contacted at - A brief justification for your travel bursary application (if applicable) - Accessibility & dietary needs Individual papers and presentations should be no more than 20 minutes. Roundtables, workshops, panels, should be no more than 1 hour and 45 minutes, including opportunity for Q&A. Participants will be notified of their acceptance by mid-August. ABOUT THE TORONTO QUEER FILM FESTIVAL TQFF is organized by an ad-hoc collective of artists and arts professionals who came together in 2016 to launch the Toronto Queer Film Festival. We began this project out of an urgent need to provide screen space in Toronto for media by and about marginalized queer and trans people. We have three primary mandates: 1) to exhibit queer independent and experimental film and video art; 2) to support the production of alternative queer film and video art through community-based arts education and professional development; and 3) to foster community engagement with the arts by welcoming all attendees to our accessible venues with ?pay what you can? pricing for events, ASL interpretation, and closed captioning of all programs. TQFF distinguishes itself from other Toronto cultural events that serve the LGBT community by focusing on experimental time-based media that challenges and expands social, political, and artistic conventions. Our curatorial mandate is to centre the programming of work by and about queer and trans people of colour, Indigenous people, and people with disabilities, as well as the work of local artists, low-income, DIY filmmakers, and emerging artists. Jeffress, PhD, Associate Professor of Communication, Tennessee State University Contact: michaelsjeffress@gmail.com *Description:* Language is a powerful cultural artifact. It reflects attitudes, values, and beliefs. What people say and how they say it not only reflects the culture that socially constructed them, but it also shapes perceptions, understandings, and self-concepts of those to whom the communication is directed. The types of communication people utilize, whom they communicate to, the language they use, the nonverbal communication they exhibit, and the modalities of communication they select, among other aspects of language, provide insights into how people think about those on the receiving end of the communication. Language is more than an artifact within culture, it is the dynamic force that creates and sustains it. Communication is culture, and culture is communication. This is both a curse and a blessing. On the one hand, communication can be used to create a culture of division and exclusion, but on the other, communication can transform a culture into a welcoming and empowering space of inclusion and equality. Nowhere is this more evident than in the way in which people communicate about disabilities and people who have them. This new volume will showcase timely essays that interrogate contemporary communication practices related to how disability is framed. How do people and society (government, the press, movies, television, music, business, advertising, etc.) communicate to, through and about disability? How do they communicate to people who have disabilities? What does ?political correctness? mean and how has it evolved? How pervasive is disability microaggression and what forms does it take? How is communication tied to disability models? Do we need to move beyond the person-first vs. identity-first language? These are just some of the questions that this volume will address. *Instructions:* Step 1: Scholars are invited to submit 250-word abstracts for chapter proposals. Topics might include social media, big data, and smart cities, personal data sovereignty, algorithmic discrimination, cybersecurity, freedom of expression, and ubiquitous state and corporate surveillance. To address these disparate topics, our conference asks participants to address how the work of Marshall McLuhan on media and space ?physical, virtual, public, private, borders, boundaries, environments and anti-environments? may be a point of departure and/or arrival to inform current and future regulatory/legal frameworks addressing digital media? What approaches to media and space help explain contradictions between contemporary globalization (of economies, cultures, technologies) and reassertion of national sovereignty and border controls? Here's the back cover blurb: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has seen major advances in recent years. While machines were always central to the Marxist analysis of capitalism, AI is a new kind of machine that Marx could not have anticipated. Contemporary machine-learning AI allows machines to increasingly approach human capacities for perception and reasoning in narrow domains. This book explores the relationship between Marxist theory and AI through the lenses of different theoretical concepts, including surplus-value, labour, the general conditions of production, class composition and surplus population. It argues against left accelerationism and post-Operaismo thinkers, asserting that a deeper analysis of AI produces a more complex and disturbing picture of capitalism's future than has previously been identified. Inhuman Power argues that on its current trajectory, AI represents an ultimate weapon for capital. It will render humanity obsolete or turn it into a species of transhumans working for a wage until the heat death of the universe; a fate that is only avoidable by communist revolution. The normative fundamentals and professional ideology of journalism are often taken as a given and the starting point for practice and research. Yet scholars have highlighted the persistence of power structures with the discipline of communications in general, and journalism more specifically. Journalism has been described as a form of elite discourse that promotes, maintains and reifies political, ideological and economic hierarchies to the detriment of other groups, reproduced by journalists working under editorial, professional, managerial and financial constraints. Critiques of journalism have pointed out how maleness and whiteness have been embedded in journalistic norms and practices. These notions have shaped the definition of what and whom is newsworthy and contributing to a process of ?othering? along lines of class, ethnicity, gender, race, Indigeneity, sexuality or national difference. Such work goes beyond simply considering the over-representation of male whiteness in the newsroom to consider the prominence of elite sources, disregard for other groups, inaccurate depictions of racialised groups, and potential harm to marginalized communities. At the same time, emergent actors, from the Alt Right to #BlackLivesMatter to #metoo, have leveraged networked, digital media to connect communities, advance their own perspectives, and challenge narratives of representation in the mainstream media, prompting initiatives among some publications to be more representative and inclusive of diverse communities. This issue of the #ISOJ Journal welcomes studies that engages with the communicative power of journalism as a starting point to reimagine what journalism could be. It seeks research that explores and advances ideas on how journalism can better connect, reflect and serve increasingly diverse and global publics. It invites submissions that explore how ideas of power, privilege and patriarchy intersect and shape journalism?s institutional forms, practices, and epistemologies, including both empirical articles (using quantitative, qualitative, computational and/or mixed methods) and theoretical articles. It also invites studies that address the pervasiveness of whiteness in pedagogy to consider how journalism education could acknowledge and address racialized or gendered social structures. #ISOJ Journal, the official research publication of the International Symposium on OnlineJournalism (http://isoj.org/research/), is seeking extended abstracts (up to 1,000 words) for a special issue on this topic, to be published in conjunction with the next ISOJ symposium in April 2020. A subset of the authors of selected extended abstracts will be asked to send full manuscripts. All submitted manuscripts will undergo a blind review process, and the authors of those articles selected for publication also will be invited to present their work at the symposium. Note: For papers that are accepted to the conference and journal, authors will not be charged or asked to make?a payment in order for their articles to appear in the journal. ISOJ doesn?t have article processing charges. Inquiries about this call may be directed to alfred.hermida AT ubc.ca and should contain the words ?ISOJ Query? in the subject line. Extended abstracts and full manuscripts should be emailed to ISOJ research chair Amy Schmitz Weiss at aschmitz@sdsu.edu Notices for selected extended abstracts will be sent by September 13, 2019. Full papers are expected by October 21, 2019. Without clear direction, AI risks becoming privatized and at odds with a common world. In a recent study, researchers calculated the costs of training a deep neural network model for use in natural language processing. Their findings are alarming. The energy required can result in CO2 emissions equal to the lifetime emissions of five cars. Meanwhile, the financial cost of the computing needed to carry out this research has become so high that academic researchers cannot participate, enclosing AI innovation within the profit-oriented technology industry. A commons approach to AI seeks to mitigate these harms, just as commons approaches in other areas have intervened in environmental devastation and the privatization and commodification of knowledge. The term ?commons? was initially rooted in theories about the conditions and consequences of sharing resources. But theorists and activists have worked to broaden it, naming new commons in order to advocate for their protection while developing praxis to govern them. This shift in understanding has been greatly informed by indigenous scholarship and indigenous people?s histories, epistemologies, and practices, which offer a wealth of approaches to the management and preservation of common resources, material and otherwise. In this workshop, we invite you to reflect broadly on artificial intelligence and its relation to the commons as you consider the following questions: 1. What should an AI Commons be? * How could a commons-based approach guide the development of AI? * How does a commons approach differ from proposed ethical or rights-based frameworks? 2. How could the development of AI today?including the infrastructure and knowledge at its foundation?become a commons? * What forms of collective action and governance would be necessary? What movements and efforts already exist? * What latent commons or undercommons might we find in thinking about AI? 3. Could AI reshape how we think about the commons, leading to new theories or practices? * How might related (or unrelated) approaches to the commons be understood through AI and the commons (e.g., making kin, new materialism, infrastructures of care, or platform cooperativism)? * What histories and instances of the commons does an AI commons require for context and inspiration? 4. How might we imagine a future common world for the machines, environments, humans, and other life drawn together by the industrial efforts around AI? * How can humans, AI, and other agents collaborate equitably in these commons? * How might AI reproduce sustainably within the natural commons, unseating extractive and settler approaches to common worlds? We invite people from diverse professions and communities to contribute as either a workshop participant or a speaker. Participants are expected to prepare a short 500-word position statement on one of these questions to be shared before the workshop then workshopped in groups to draft a shared response to these questions to be integrated into a public position paper. Speakers are expected to prepare a short 15-minute presentation, participate in a roundtable and animate around 1-2 of these questions. The workshop is invite only. Some travel funds will be available for speakers. Best, Enda NEW BOOK: The Smart City in a Digital World Vincent Mosco www.vincentmosco.com Paperback https://bit.ly/2TRs2iS Kindle edition: http://amzn.to/2iyoZKa What makes a city smart? The Smart City in a Digital World takes on this question by describing, challenging, and offering democratic alternatives to the view that the answer begins and ends with technology. In the wake of the 2008 global financial meltdown, corporations converged on cities around the world to sell technology, harvest valuable data, and deepen the private governance of urban life. They partnered with governments to promise what on the surface look like unalloyed benefits to city dwellers: safer streets, cleaner air, more efficient transportation, instant communication for all, and algorithms that take governance out of the hands of flawed human beings. Another story lies beneath that surface. Technology-driven smart cities deepen surveillance, shift urban governance to private companies, shrink democracy, create a hacker?s paradise, and hasten the coming of catastrophic climate change. The Smart City insists that people make cities smart, that human governance still matters, and that genuinely intelligent cities start with a vibrant democracy, a commitment to public space, and to citizen control over technology. To make this happen, we need to understand the technologies, the organizations, and the mythologies that power the global smart cities movement, as well as the growing resistance to the technology-driven city. Drawing on case studies from around the world that document the redevelopment of old cities and the creation of entirely new ones, The Smart City provides an essential guide to the future of urban life in a digital world. Co-sponsored by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and the Canadian Communications Association (CCA), the Prize is awarded on an annual basis to graduate students and post-doctoral researchers https://acc-cca.ca/whose research contributes to the advancement of public and policy-relevant knowledge on the economic, political, technological and cultural dimensions of communications in Canada. The objective of the CRTC is to ensure that Canadians have access to a world-class communications system. To ensure its regulatory framework is innovative, relevant, and effective, it regularly collaborates with stakeholders at the national and international levels of communications governance to gather information on current trends and policy developments in the Canadian and global communication landscape. The CRTC Prize for Excellence in Policy Research seeks to encourage a new generation of researchers to contribute to the public development of communications and digital media policy in Canada. SPHM INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2020 Media Trades and Professions (18th to 21st Century) http://www.histoiredesmedias.com/Appel-IIIe-Congres-de-la-SPHM.html June 4th to 6th, 2020, University of Lausanne (Switzerland) Proposals (a maximum of 3000 characters in Word or PDF files) must include a title, an explicit problematic, and a short bibliography. The author must attach a short bio-bibliographic record (15 lines) in a separate file. Proposals will be subject to a double-blind peer review process. Proposals are due on September 20th, 2019 and should be sent to the following address: SPHM2020lausanne at unil.ch This third edition of the SPHM International Conference is organised by the Society for Media History (la Soci?t? pour l?histoire des M?dias, http://www.histoiredesmedias.com) and by the Centre for the Historical Sciences of Culture of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Lausanne (le Centre des Sciences historiques de la culture de la Facult? des Lettres, https://www.unil.ch/shc), with the support of several research laboratories based in Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, and Qu?bec[1], including the National Audiovisual Institute (Institut national de l?audiovisuel) and the Historical Committee of the Audiovisual and Digital Observatory (Comit? d?histoire de l?Observatoire de l?audiovisuel et du num?rique). As with the two previous editions, this conference aims to bring together both junior and senior international researchers, historians, and specialists from diverse disciplines around a common field of study: media history. The selected theme, ?Media Trades and Professions? is intended to be sufficiently inclusive to allow specialists in the field, regardless of their methods or approaches, to contribute to discourses of collective reflection while illuminating new areas of research that have yet to be explored by the community. The organisers are devoted to promoting multidisciplinary, transmedia, and transnational approaches, remaining particularly receptive to media and geographical zones less marked by historiographical perspectives. 1-Realms of Representation First and foremost, this Conference strives to challenge the constructed representations of media trades and professions that have been disseminated since the end of the eighteenth century. This practice may consist of studies devoted to the methods of representation of these professionals in the context of various forms of cultural productions (media, literary, visual, and theatrical productions, amongst others) but also of investigations specifically related to the ways in which professionals think, perceive, and represent themselves and one another. Comparative approaches ? in particular those that are transnational ? are especially valuable here, as are bodies of work that are interested in examining the contrasts between the study of these representations with the material, economic, and practical conditions of their productions. These representational approaches may revolve around different types of inquiries: ? How did shared ideologies such as values, worldviews, and political positions evolve during different historical periods within certain professional circles of the media industry? ? How do these professions develop, forge their legitimacy, and work to establish professional standards? How do certain professional circles construct, often through interactions with other disciplines, their identity, sense of belonging, or a collective memory of their own history? ? What are the tensions that arise between the prestigious status of certain professions and the economic and social fragility that often manifests as a source of frustration with one?s vision of their own endeavours? From this perspective, it is essential to acknowledge various inequalities of gender, social class, race, territory, etc., considering the reality that the precarious nature of media professions affects groups and individuals in unequal ways. ? How can research in the fields of human and social sciences contribute to the development, dissemination, and evolution of different forms of political, professional, or institutional representations (local, national, and transnational associations; labour unions, lobby organisations; professional press groups?)? 2-Professional Practice Methods Proposals may also be concerned with the study of professional practices. More specifically, with a focus on the diversity of these professions and practices. Proposals may, of course, pertain to professional sectors that have already been extensively studied within historiography (certain journalism and cinema occupations, for example). However, the organisational committee of this conference wishes to promote research on professional practices that remain of little interest to researchers or that pose difficulties in access to sources. Such trades that would deserve further attention from researchers, to name a few, include television and radio editors; set decorators; proof-readers in the printing industry; readers, agents, and designers in publishing; press correspondents; theatre prompters or leaders of applause; or even crowd-warmers or impresarios? The study of such practices can unearth questions surrounding the nature of the limits of these professions: ? What exactly differentiates professional practices from amateur ones in these various domains? ? What are the ?admission tickets? or the ?barriers? associated with the practice of certain professions (for example, a press pass in journalism)? ? Which professions, of those that are not directly involved in the production of media content, are intimately linked to the history of media (for example, industrial and engineering professions, specialists from international organisations, media sociologists and historians)? ? In which ways are media professionals linked to institutions that are not directly related to the production of media (military film operators and audiovisual supervisors at schools and universities, for example)? The study of professional practices may promote awareness and appreciation for certain locations, actors, and dynamics. The organisers will be particularly receptive to proposals that facilitate research on the international circulation of particular models, recognition of professional profiles (the roles of cultural mediators, international trajectories, the places that educate countless foreign students?), and the long-term, widespread study of the transformations or eccentricities of these professional practices. Questions surrounding the workspaces of media professionals (from offices to studios to open-air laboratories), as well as their materials (tools and objects; technological advances; devices and channels; the rise of digital technologies and their subsequent uses, their dissemination, and impacts; processes of dematerialisation?), are also welcome in the Conference programme. Lastly, the examination of professional practice methods may stimulate questions regarding the different articulations of individual and collective practices and to distinguish prominent figures of a certain profession having, for example, an anonymous author or artist status to which it could be valuable to pay attention. 3-The Sociology of Media Professions These proposals will have the capacity to unite various sociological or socio-historical approaches in order to demystify the mechanisms specific to the structure of certain media professions, the strategies of legitimisation and prestige within them, and the recomposition of socio-professional groups during certain historical periods. Among the questions that may be explored in this perspective: ? What role does discrimination play in access to certain occupations, and what are the obstacles related to class, gender, race, nationality, religion and/or generational inequalities? ? What are some pathways and sites of training (highlighting in some cases the weight of self-education), the nature and evolution of remuneration, the diversity of career paths emphasised by a transnational perspective, the characteristics or traditions specific to certain spheres, as well as the forms of partnership or assembly at the international level? ? How can we map the legitimisation strategies of the press and of professional associations, as well as of certain sites of sociability specific to particular professions (conferences, festivals, expositions, exhibitions, etc.)? ? What role do power dynamics play within each professional environment? What are the relationships between those who possess power, be they political authorities or economic and financial actors? 4-Relationships with Audiences and the Public Opinion The research of media trades, professions, and professionals must also promote the study of the connections between professionals and their public(s) by investigating, for example: ? Occupations directly related to media reception analysis in a qualitative and/or quantitative perspective (long-term audience measurement analysis, implementation of surveys); ? The presentation of professional actors at the interface between the media and the public (for example, mediators in editorial offices, censorship boards, or appeal or complaint authorities that make decisions concerning ethical issues); ? The integration of audience expectations and the influence of public feedback on the production of media content (analysis of market research, public testing); ? The evolution of the public perception of these professions, particularly during significant social movements (the representation of journalists during the Revolution of 1830?up until the yellow vests). 5- Methodological and Epistemological Reflections on Research-Based Approaches Proposals reflecting on contemporary writing regarding the history of media trades, professions, and professionals are also welcome. Particular examples in this area of research include: ? The temporalities related to media professions/professionals and how to understand them throughout history. This may take into account historical complexities and questions about the nature of temporalities encountered by media professionals in their endeavours, whether in terms of the treatment of their subject matter, recourse to historical revelations, career patterns, positions regarding programme structures, changes related to the introduction of rebroadcasting, of the digital, etc., and the presentation of historical processes that determine them. The integration of methods borrowed from other disciplines (participatory observations, fieldwork?) to develop understanding, notably experiences such as those led by John Ellis and his team within the ADAPT project (http://www.adapttvhistory.org.uk) of historical re-enactment of the practices of television professionals, may be presented; ? Sites of analysis, whether to propose case studies that raise awareness of international cultural circulations, places of exchange, reference and living spaces of a profession, heritage domains, or to interrogate perspectives and obstacles of comparative and circulatory research approaches; ? Challenges that researchers face in accessing and preserving the archives of media professions and professionals. Testimonials, objects, oral interviews, and many other sources and archives, as well as their presentation in narratives or exhibitions, can effectively be questioned; ? Interdisciplinary practices can be gathered ? for example, approaches to media professions and professionals through a gender studies or postcolonial studies perspective. Research comparing the reciprocal issues of disciplinary approaches and studies are welcome. ? The role of the digital, whether as a tool or support for media professions and professionals or as a means by which to access sources to trace their histories. The changes in research methods by the widespread use of digital technologies in many media-related professions, as well as by the appearance of natively digital archives (for example, INA?s archiving of twitter accounts belonging to audiovisual journalists, etc.), seem to be equally fruitful areas of study. Ultimately, these three days will be dedicated to establishing a wide panorama of the diversity of contemporary modes of production of knowledge on media trades, professions, and professionals in an attempt to review the concepts, debates, and methods that have been addressed while identifying the obstacles, perspectives, and the unexpected elements fundamental to the future challenges that the historian will have to overcome. Proposal Submissions: Communication proposals may be individual or collective. For the latter, proposals may not have more than a maximum of three co-authors. You also have the opportunity to submit a panel proposal (a session on a given topic) including a general description and an explanation of the individual interventions anticipated. Proposals (a maximum of 3000 characters in Word or PDF files) must include a title, an explicit problematic, and a short bibliography. The author must attach a short bio-bibliographic record (15 lines) in a separate file. Proposals will be subject to a double-blind peer review process. Proposals must be sent no later than September 20th, 2019 to the following address: SPHM2020lausanne at unil.ch Practical Information: Registration fees (speakers and audience): ? The futures of automation and work. U of Toronto, October 3 Message-ID: Robotize this! The futures of automation and work International Conference, Thursday October 3rd, 9AM to 6PM McLuhan Centre for Culture and Technology 39A Queens Park Crescent East, University of Toronto Are robots coming for our jobs? The current resurgence of anxiety around automation seems to suggest they are. But other symptoms point out that robots will rather make us work more, and in new ways. And then, what kind of jobs, and what kind of robots? The robotization of traditionally gendered and racialized forms of work is not neutral. And robots will better learn to collaborate with workers if capital is to keep extracting value from living labour. This international conference will discuss the past, present, and many possible futures of automation. This needs to be approached from many different angles. Our human speakers come from media studies, engineering, technology studies, literature, and labour studies. The day will be opened by an international graduate colloquium on digital labour. We will also pay a visit to robots and do our best to befriend them. The workshop is a collaboration between the International Network on Digital Labor, which is funded by a University of Toronto ? CNRS Joint Research Proposal Grant, and the McLuhan Centre for Culture and Technology. Speakers and session chairs include: Greg Albo, York University Antonio Casilli, Paris School of Telecommunications Alessandro Delfanti, University of Toronto Jennifer Rhee, Virginia Commonwealth University Shane Saunderson, University of Toronto Frauke Zeller, Ryerson University Paola Tubaro, CNRS Paris Julie Chen, University of Toronto Greig de Peuter, Wilfird Laurier University Sarah Sharma, University of Toronto The graduate colloquium will feature: Sana Ahmad, Weizenbaum Institute Marcelo Castro, University of Toronto Ellen Kaufman, Indiana University Zachary La Rock, University of Chicago Sarah Marquis, University of Guelph Elinor Wahal, Telecom Paris More info and registration at: http://endl.network/indl-2-conference-robotize-this Alessandro Delfanti University of Toronto www.delfanti.org a.delfanti at utoronto.ca -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Communication doctoral lecture 2019 Theories and practices in public relations: towards reconciliation? Guest professor: St?phanie Yates (UQAM) Monday, September 30th, 7 to 9 pm Desmarais building, 55 Laurier East, room DMS 12102 (12th floor) The annual Doctoral lecture in communication, that celebrates our PhD program at the University of Ottawa bringing together renowned communication researchers to share their insights on current events, will take place on Monday, September 30th at 7 pm. This year we welcome Dr. St?phanie Yates, professor in the Department of Social and Public Communication at the Universit? du Qu?bec ? Montr?al (UQAM), Assistant Chair in Public Relations and Marketing Communication at UQAM, and a member of the Groupe de recherche en communication politique at Universit? Laval. In her bilingual lecture entitled Theories and practices in public relations: towards reconciliation?, Dr. Yates will take stock of recent theories in this field. In public relations, it often seems that researchers come from Mars and practitioners from Venus. Indeed, the normative ideals advocated by James E. Grunig's theory of excellence in public relations are difficult to reconcile with the realities on the ground. Even well-intentioned practitioners must respond to a specific mandate whose objectives often leave little room for negotiation, let alone approaches that would be symmetrical. Recent cases raising social acceptability issues - construction of pipelines, mines, landfills, or wind farms - illustrate the gap between theoretical precepts and concrete situations. We published the paper "Cultural policies for sustainable development: four strategic paths ? in 2017, but the question of how to transition to more sustainable societies hasn?t lost any urgency. On the contrary. And while many people in arts and culture are keen to contribute positively to this change, too many people simply assume a positive relationship between culture and sustainable development. In this paper, we challenge this uncritical view, but constructively propose four ?strategic paths? through which cultural policy and people and organisations in arts and culture can take action. Now, usually, academic articles like this are locked away behind paywalls. This one is no exception. But given the urgency of the issue, and the upcoming UNCTAD and ENCATC meetings on the topic next month, the publisher kindly agreed to allow free access until the end of October, at this link: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10286632.2017.1280789 Best regards, Nancy Nancy Duxbury Carreiro, PhD Investigadora PhD | Senior Researcher Co-coordinator, Cities, Culture, and Architecture Research Group Centro de Estudos Sociais (CES) | Centre for Social Studies University of Coimbra Col?gio S. However, there is another no-cost way to do this, one that I recommend, using our institutional repositories. For example, if you are publishing with Taylor & Francis, you can use the Sherpa RoMEO list http://sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/ to find out the publishers' default policies on self-archiving, and it is often possible to negotiate authors' rights beyond the default (I've done this, e.g. negotiated two open access book chapters when publishing a traditional print book). T & F's default policy for SSH journals is to allow deposit of preprints (pre-refereeing version) and post-prints (your final version after peer review before publishers' final PDF), the latter with an 18-month embargo. Two examples of how and why I use this approach: My book chapter What counts in research? Dysfunction in knowledge creation & moving beyond is forthcoming in a traditional university press print book. When finally published, this will make a nice addition to my CV, but the work was substantially completed some time ago. In order to share the work in a timely fashion and make sure it is available to everyone in future (not just those who choose to buy the book), I made a copy available through my IR: https://ruor.uottawa.ca/handle/10393/39088 The IR is also useful for us to share and receive credit for new types of works, such as this open peer review: https://ruor.uottawa.ca/handle/10393/39053 One reason I use IRs rather than social networks such as Mendeley and SSRN is ownership and control and not knowing the business model. Both Mendeley and SSRN began as independent commercial companies, but have since been bought by Elsevier. If you are at a Canadian university, your library probably has an IR and staff who can help you with deposit. The Directory of Open Access Repositories lists 87 repositories for Canada: https://v2.sherpa.ac.uk/view/repository_by_country/ca.html best, Dr. Heather Morrison Associate Professor, School of Information Studies, University of Ottawa Professeur Agr?g?, ?cole des Sciences de l'Information, Universit? d'Ottawa Principal Investigator, Sustaining the Knowledge Commons, a SSHRC Insight Project sustainingknowledgecommons.org Heather.Morrison at uottawa.ca https://uniweb.uottawa.ca/?lang=en#/members/706 [On research sabbatical July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Abstracts are due Oct 15, 2019. Among the many changes introduced by new media technologies to news practices, the growing utilization of User Generated Content (UGC) is one of the most challenging. Members of the public are capturing dramatic events around the world and then sharing them, not only on social media platforms, but with professional news media organizations which are eagerly incorporating posts, tweets and images into professionally produced news stories. The presence of amateur content in news discourses is a growing phenomenon that is reshaping the profession of journalism, news coverage and public expectations. The issues raised by these practices often involve tensions between labour precarity and professionalism, entertainment and evidence, centralized and decentralized management of news rooms, traditional and emerging forms of social media news narratives, truth and immediacy. We are calling for papers from academic researchers and journalists that address this important and timely subject. Questions the collection will address include: 1. How is the use of UGC reorganizing professional practices? ? User generated content and professionalism in news rooms ? Role and significance of verification in news production ? The problems of fake news when working with UGC ? The growing shift of UGC onto private networks: threats and opportunities ? The challenge and opportunities of new technologies for professional news rooms 2. How is UGC transforming labour practices among journalists and the structural organization of news media? ? Changing labour practices in the newsroom ? Changing structures, staffing and organization of news desks ? Organizational changes and emerging business models ? Emerging forms of produsers and precarious labour ? Professional labour vis-?-vis labour of love 3. How is UGC influencing the construction of meaning in news coverage? ? The impact of user produced content on the form and aesthetic of visual news ? Role of contextualization in UGC verification services ? The influence of non-professional producers on news narratives, framing and agendas 4. What are emerging themes and tensions in non-professional practices of production? ? Emerging motivations for creating UGC news content ? Emerging practices and conventions for UGC production ? Precarity and risk in UGC production 5. What are the theoretical, methodological and historical considerations helping to understand and explain the growing use of UGC in professional news coverage? Deadline: Abstracts (300-500 words) should be emailed to the editors by Oct 15, 2019 clearly identified by ?UGC Chapter Abstract? in the subject line. Email: michael.lithgow at athabascau.ca Please contact the editors (at the same email address) if you have any questions.
