We'll take you on a journey through humourous flow charts, choose-your-own-adventure style interactive scenarios (in which you'll hopefully avoid perishing), and group Q&A as we explore new, appreciative approaches to peer review and knowledge creation that are rooted in creativity, community, and care. Podcast or Perish Book Launch Tuesday April 16th 9 am Pacific time 12pm Eastern time 5pm BST 6pm CEST Online via Zoom Please register here to obtain the Zoom link About the book: By investigating the historical development of the norms of scholarly communication, the unique affordances of sound-based scholarship and the transformative potential of new modes of creating and reviewing expert knowledge, Podcast or Perish is the call to action academia needs. "Provocative, playful and pointed in its analysis of the production and evaluation of scholarly knowledge, this book is informed by a deep understanding of podcasting and the audio medium. It illuminates how podcasting, with its focus on voice, conversation and participation, can greatly advance the accessibility of scholarly knowledge. The book will help academics frustrated by the limitations of print-based peer review understand ? and experiment with - the alluring power of podcasting in teaching, learning and research contexts." -- Siobhan McHugh, podcast scholar/practitioner and author of The Power of Podcasting: Telling Stories Through Sound (2022) "This timely book is uniquely suited to our present moment of rapid change and uncertainty in higher education. Academics have the tools to revise (and resubmit) the standards of peer review and in this refreshing and engaging book the podcast is presented as a means for not only rethinking our work, but also for carving out an auditory space for scholarly discourse in an era of transformation." -- Brian Fauteux, associate professor of popular music and media studies, University of Alberta We hope to see you there! About the College and University Launched in Summer 2023, Seton Hall?s College of Human Development, Culture, and Media (CHDCM) embodies the University?s commitment to pedagogical innovation, intellectual ferment, and community engagement. Uniting scholars and students from four dynamic departments?Communication, Media, and the Arts; Education Leadership, Management, and Policy; Educational Studies; and Professional Psychology and Family Therapy?the College is the new home of cutting-edge, transdisciplinary inquiry into the stickiest problems of our time. The faculty, staff, and students of the College seek to improve the human condition by collaborating across distinct fields that uniquely complement one another, thereby preparing the next generation of dynamic leaders poised to tackle contemporary social challenges and opportunities. Expression underpins all facets of the integrated College?s portfolio ? media as a form of education and artistic expression; teaching and learning as modes of creative expression; expression and expressibility as critical to counseling and therapeutic treatment; and self-expression as a vehicle of social agency. With enrollment at approximately 1,550 total students, both graduate and undergraduate, CHDCM is the second largest college at Seton Hall University, with approximately 70 full time faculty and 125 adjunct faculty. Seton Hall is located in South Orange, New Jersey, just 14 miles from New York City. It is home to approximately 6,300 undergraduate and 4,700 graduate students from every state in the United States and from more than 70 countries around the world. Read the report here: https://www.amo-oma.ca/en/ai-policy-report/ You can read more in a co-published piece with Joanna Redden today in the Conversation: https://theconversation.com/the-federal-governments-proposed-ai-legislation-misses-the-mark-on-protecting-canadians-227186 Our key findings: 1. Canadian AI governance focuses on economic and industrial policy. National symbolic investment in AI dampens critical discussion about the technology and its risks. 2. AI governance is uncoordinated and lacks clear mandates for consultation and effective mechanisms of feedback, which impedes good governance and public participation. 3. AI policy is marked by notable silences on key issues, including Indigenous rights and data sovereignty, the creative and cultural sectors, and the environmental impact of AI. 4. The Government of Canada is a key site of AI development and deployment that remains understudied in current legislation. The chapters cover a range of topics, including: * the Canadian government?s algorithmic impact assessment * ethics and federal AI procurement * public consultations on the use of facial recognition technologies * the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research?s involvement in AI research and policy * the use of racially biased AI technology in Canada?s immigration system Highlighting the need to improve consultation and public participation in AI governance, the report questions the assumptions behind the development of the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act and its inclusion in Bill C-27. AIDA?s passage raises larger concerns about digital policy development and governance, accountability, and oversight in Canada. Shaping AI is part of a multinational and multidisciplinary social research project that examines the global trajectories of public discourse on AI in four countries (Germany, UK, Canada, and France) over a ten-year period, 2012-2021. Funded by the European Open Research Area, Shaping AI brings together leading research teams from each of the four countries under scrutiny. CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue: Teaching communication & media studies in polarized times? [https://files.constantcontact.com/f8fc7ccb001/161be8d9-56fa-4b9a-b790-7451c759736a.jpg?rdr=true] In a post-pandemic world marked by growing socio-economic disparities, increasing regulation of universities by governments, geopolitical tensions, and climate change anxieties, engaging in a critical examination of what, how, and by whom communication and media studies are taught takes on a heightened urgency. Given the field?s fluid intellectual boundaries, how do we navigate teaching communication and media studies in such polarized times? The collection of articles selected for this proposed special issue of the Canadian Journal of Communication aims to provoke a much-needed conversation about teaching in and about the field of communication and media studies through complex lived realities. Potential research topics include: * what constitutes ?threshold,? or foundational, concepts to understanding communication and media and how to teach them in polarized times. Should the key threshold concepts change in the light of the current historical moment? * pedagogical and curricular approaches to defining and engaging with issues relating to, among others, race, decolonization, gender, social justice, intersectionality, political polarization, disinformation, rising authoritarianism, climate change, and the simultaneous need to foster relevant literacy skills and competencies * the interrelationship between teaching and research, particularly in complex historical moments Editors Sandra Gabriele, Daniel J. Par?, and Sandra Smeltzer invite proposals that outline the intervention the paper seeks to make, include a preliminary bibliography, and are approximately 500 words in length. Deadline for proposals: Friday, May 3, 2024 Read the Full Call for Papers About the Canadian Journal of Communication Canadian Journal of Communication (CJC) publishes Canadian research and scholarship in the field of communication studies. The conference will feature interdisciplinary scholarship, performances, and activism around the theme of The Feminist Frontier: Reimagining and Reenergizing for the Future. As we pivot from Failure, we are faced with a feminist frontier that allows us to choose our next path towards the future for our scholarship and careers. This location is perfect for determining which path to take to reimagine the future of our scholarship, careers, and even with OSCLG while reenergizing our minds and bodies. For the 2024 OSCLG conference, we invite submissions that explore reimagining and reenergizing and all the opportunities of the Feminist Frontier through various scholarly lenses. Topics may include but are not limited to reimagining and reenergizing discussions of gender, race, sexuality, ability, and the effects of pivoting from failure to exploring the future. Pivoting to the frontier ahead, topics emerge about how we can reemerge from the ashes of failure with opportunities to reflect on what does or does not still succeed in the ever-evolving landscape of feminist scholarship, feminist teachers, and feminists in life. We invite you to reimagine and reenergize with us in Excelsior Springs, as we are faced with the choice of which path we will take into the new Feminist Frontier. Submissions are invited for presentations in multiple formats including papers, extended abstracts, posters, panels, and performances that address all aspects of communication, language, and gender. Sessions are scheduled for 75 minutes. Presentation time will be planned to allow for discussion at each session. Please note that AV equipment will not be available because of cost restrictions. Hirschman lui-m?me (1993). Ludovic Bonduel (ludovic.bonduel at sciencespo.fr), Francesco Brancaccio (francescobrancaccio at yahoo.it) et Kianoosh Yasaei (kianoosh.yasaei03 at univ-paris8.fr) ? tous les trois affili?s au laboratoire CEMTI de l?universit? I wrote The New Journalist's Guide to Freelancing: Building Your Career in the New Media Landscape (Broadview Press) to fill the gap I felt when I came out of Journalism school and found myself in the world of freelance. It's a mix of how-to guide and shorter, snappier textbook that covers that basics of working freelance, and includes lots of first-person accounts of freelancers who work in print, audio, video, and more. Written from a Canadian perspective (with sections for each that address Canadian and US differences in taxes and copyright), this book stands on its own (perhaps a gift for that recent media grad in your life?) but I've also used it to redevelop our Media Entrepreneurship course for the Broadcast Media Studies and Journalism & Digital Media programs at Mount Royal University. You can read a bit more about the book and the course on J-Source: Why freelancing is now a necessary part of journalism education (March 8, 2024). I'm including a discount code for The New Journalist's Guide to Freelancing below ? but if you would like access to a digital exam copy, feel free to email me at mwilcox at mtroyal.ca. I'll also be at the CCA conference with some free copies if you'd like to meet and grab a print one! Scholars have also addressed how discourses of diplomacy in games create tropes such as the multicultural manager or cartographers helping indigenous others. Moreover, scholarship on game patches demonstrates how games are unstable objects that tend to change over time. This paper is a part of a larger project examining colorblind racism or softer forms of racism within games and game cultures. Focusing on Civilization VI and Victoria 3, the paper continues those examinations of colonial game mechanics and game patching by focusing on how developers choose to address or patch up the colonial mechanics of previous iterations of their games by introducing more gameplay mechanics that encourage diplomacy. By choosing to patch up colonialism with diplomacy, these games mask neo-colonial discourses, colorblind racism and post-racial myths that frame colonial Others as those always in need of guidance and education. Moreover, I highlight the importance of examining patches in examining discourses of colonialism. These patches indicate the ongoing process of addressing colonialism in games. Speaker Bio: Dr. Sarah Christina Ganzon is an Assistant Professor of the School of Communication at SFU. Her research revolves mostly around the areas of game studies and digital fandom. Recently, she finished her thesis on otome games in English, and otome game players. II: Mediating Difference through Design in Community-based Urban Contexts by Samar Sabie Discussants: Parastoo Mazaheri (York), Leslie Salgado Arzuaga (UCalgary) Difference is a fundamental aspect of life, especially within urban communities. This difference stems from a multiplicity of factors around age, gender, ethnicity, standards of living, organizational affiliations, and cultural traditions among others. Each individual/societal group could therefore hold a different, even conflicting, claim for what it means to have a good life. This raises the question of how diverse urban communities can learn to design together and shape the future of their shared environments. My doctoral work, spanning three years of fieldwork with various community groups in New York City, investigated how communities can leverage design to mediate difference in urban contexts. This work is informed by three stances that I identify from democratic and feminist techno-science theories. The first stance sees a resolution to differences in deliberations during which diverse groups could enjoy moments of commonality as they work towards a shared goal. The second stance advocates opening up our minds, hearts, and institutions to other points of view through tolerance and making time for care. The third stance envisions a distributive power model where diverse voices enact contestational labor through arenas and design contexts specifically designated for conflict. In this talk, I will discuss how I have interpreted these stances in my work through a design lens, share some research findings on their affordances and limitations, and reflect on what a shared idea of ?progress? actually means in light of my focus on difference. Speaker Bio: Dr. Samar Sabie is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Communication, Culture, Information, and Technology at the University of Toronto. Her research investigates how design as a socio-material practice can contribute to developing adaptive capacity in civic communities towards sustainable change. --- Sibo Chen (he/him) Assistant Professor & Graduate Program Director School of Professional Communication Toronto Metropolitan University (Formerly Ryerson University) We acknowledge that Toronto is in the 'Dish With One Spoon Territory?. St?phane Couture, Ph.D. Professeur agr?g?
