Building on York?s longstanding commitment to deliver innovative and accessible post-graduate training, the Graduate Program in Film/Cinema & Media Studies offers a curriculum that encourages dynamic and collaborative interactions between creative artists and scholarly researchers. Students benefit from York University?s rich tradition of being at the vanguard of social justice, knowledge mobilization, and emerging technology, and directly participate in the many research-intensive initiatives and media labs housed in the School of Arts, Performance, Media and Design (AMPD) and across campus, including Sensorium: Centre for Digital Arts and Technology Research and Archive/Counter-Archive. Outstanding faculty are leaders in their fields: three are current or former Canada Research Chairs and three hold the Governor-General?s Award in Visual and Media Arts. All faculty participate actively in international and Canadian festivals, conferences, and publish widely. Many of our faculty pursue interdisciplinary research methodologies, including research creation, an increasingly popular option in the MA and PhD programs. Each year the program selects a small group of exceptional students to join its stimulating intellectual community, where students attend small seminars and receive training for careers in academic, research, and government organizations and arts and entertainment industries (television, film, new media, festivals), and in jobs in producing, programming and curation, teaching, critical writing and publishing, publicity, among others. Recent MFA program alums have won Student Academy Awards and premiered films at the Berlinale and TIFF. Recent MA alums have gone on to careers in media industries or doctoral programs in Canada and the US. Three current CMS PhD students hold Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, Canada's top award for graduate student academic and leadership excellence. Our students, faculty, and large alumni network are part of Toronto?s lively and diverse film and media culture and its many opportunities for festival programming, curation, symposia, and lectures. The City of Toronto, housing Canada?s most important media industry infrastructure, provides students with exceptional opportunities for field placements, access to film screenings, museums and galleries, festivals (over 100 film festivals occur each year, including the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Hot Docs, Reel Asian, and Images Festival), and resources like the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers (LIFT), the Archives of Ontario (now housed on York University campus), TIFF?s Film Reference Library, and other unique research collections. Recent Cinema & Media Studies courses offered in the program include: ? Methods and Research in Cinema & Media Studies (required) ? Contemporary Cinema & Media Theory (required) ? The Essay Film ? Future Cinema I & II ? Making Possible Worlds ? Race & Gender in Digital Technology ? Representing Capital ? Twenty-first Century Thought ? Emergent Media in the City Recent MFA in Film courses offered in the program include: ? Production (required) ? Screenwriting (required) ? Directing Short New Narratives ? Writing for Television ? Directing Actors ? Independent Producing ? Process Cinema ? Hybrid Fiction MFA, MA & PhD Programs In our two-year MA and MFA programs, a flexible, interdisciplinary, student-centred curriculum invites students to fulfill their unique academic, creative, and professional aspirations with ample time to benefit from York University?s rich tradition at the vanguard of interdisciplinary research, media creation, knowledge mobilization, and dedication to social justice, diversity, equity, and sustainability. Teaching, publication, and professional academic development are key components of the PhD, a minimum four-year degree with guaranteed funding for five years. Canada?s most respected graduate MFA in Film Production and Screenwriting leads students to confront the challenges posed by the fast-changing worlds of digital cinema and transmedia platforms. The MA and PhD in Cinema & Media Studies emphasize the critical study of a broad range of film and media in twenty-first century contexts. Each student creates an individually tailored program from our dynamic range of courses, workshops, partnerships, internships, and research labs. Together, students engage evolving theories and practices of global and local cinema and media, including new directions in post-colonial, feminist, queer, Indigenous, and experimental expression, and media forms like film, television, games, and XR (expanded reality, including augmented and virtual reality). Expertly guided by chosen faculty, the MFA program culminates in the creation of an original Thesis project, while the MA program has a Major Research Paper as its capstone with options for Research-Creation and Field Placement Major Research projects. All domestic MA and MFA students receive base funding of $10,000/year + York's $1000 FGS Healthcare Bursary. With York University?s emphasis on access in higher education, our graduate students pay the lowest graduate tuition in Ontario. Domestic PhD students receive more than $24,000/year in base funding along with the best healthcare benefits in Canada. All students can access research support, including generous York Academic Excellence Funds. Admission scholarships and awards are also available. In recent years, three out of four MA & MFA students have received additional funding through awards like CGS-M ($17,500/year) and OGS ($15,000/year), usually in their second year, in part due to the Program's emphasis on strong professional development, including grant writing. MFA students are provided with in-kind equipment/services grants from a wide range of Toronto co-ops, equipment houses, and post-production facilities, and production grants from donors. In recent years, most Cinema & Media Studies (CMS) PhD students have received additional funding through awards like SSHRC Doctoral Awards ($20K & $35K/year), Elia Scholars Award ($30K/year), GFAD ($20K/year), OGS ($15K/year), and Susan Crocker and John Hunkin Scholarship in the Fine Arts ($12.5K/year), in part due to the Program's emphasis on strong professional development, including grant writing. The MA & PhD programs welcome applicants with educational backgrounds in Cinema/Film Studies, Media Studies, Communications, Cultural Studies, Digital Media, Art History, English, Women?s Studies, Queer and Sexuality Studies, History, Comparative Literature, Philosophy, Education, Urban Studies, and other disciplines that nurture research in sound and moving image media. The MFA film production and screenwriting program is catered mainly towards mid-career filmmakers or writers with a track record in making and producing media. For students preparing for a future in the media industries, we also offer a 3-year joint MA/MBA or MFA/MBA degree with the world-renowned Schulich School of Business. Most students undertaking the joint degree take their first year in the Graduate Program in Film/Cinema & Media Studies and start the MBA portion in their second year. ? This is a tenure track, research-focused role that provides teaching release for the first five years of the appointment. Please apply and share the ad in your networks! Review of applications will begin early February 2024. The job ad and application portal may be found here. The full announcement is included below. Thanks! Dr. Samantha C. Thrift Associate Professor (Teaching) Head, Department of Communication, Media and Film University of Calgary Mohkinstsis (Calgary) The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut?ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the M?tis Nation of Alberta (districts 5 and 6). Assistant Professor (Research), Transdisciplinary Environmental Communication Job ID: 30771 Updated: Today Location: Main Campus We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta. The City of Calgary is also home to M?tis Nation of Alberta, Districts 5 and 6. Position Description The Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary invites applications for a tenure-track transdisciplinary position with a focus on Environmental Communication at the rank of Assistant Professor (Research). The successful candidate will be provided an initial five-year research-intensive term with reduced teaching commitments. As part of the broader University of Calgary transdisciplinary recruitment program, 20 academic positions have been created to build capacity and provide leadership in support of the Ahead of Tomorrow Strategic Plan. These scholars see challenges as opportunities that spark our singular mission ? to dare to imagine ahead of tomorrow. We are seeking a forward-thinking scholar at the forefront of environmental communication to pursue a robust research agenda with a particular emphasis on climate change, water resources, and environmental sustainability. Over 30 years ago, the First Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned of impending crises facing the planet and yet the science predicting these crises was not heard across all nations and cultures. More recently, competing discourses of climate change denial further underscore the need for innovative and effective science communication that advances public conversations on environmental crises, notably water security. As one of today?s ?wicked problems? (U.N. Sustainable Development Goals), the challenges of climate change require the creation of bold and engaging frameworks for understanding environmental justice to mobilize multi-stakeholder partnerships ? among scientists, advocacy groups, Indigenous Peoples, citizens, and creative practitioners ? and effect meaningful action on climate change. The successful candidate will be engaged in transdisciplinary environmental communication research that examines the unequal access to critical resources, such as water, precipitated by climate change; focuses on communities affected by environmental injustice(s); and innovates communication and/or media-based interventions that challenge the economic, political, and social structures perpetuating these conditions. The candidate will also establish effective means for knowledge sharing across multiple publics, including Indigenous Peoples and newcomers, who may conceive of having sustainable and healthy water systems differently, based on cultural context, personal circumstance, and previous experiences. Approaches may address environmental policy, Indigenous and/or critical approaches to environmental communication, or innovation in environmental communication (such as data visualization, participatory mapping, digital storytelling, transmedia). The position will catalyze existing research strengths focused on knowledge sharing within the Faculty of Arts and beyond. Ideally, the candidate will also participate in one or more of the University?s transdisciplinary initiatives, such as One Health, the UNU Hub on ?Empowering Communities to Adapt to Environmental Change,? and/or ii?taa?poh?to?p, the University?s Indigenous strategy. The appointments will commence July 1, 2024, or at a mutually agreeable date. We are seeking a scholar who will establish an active, transdisciplinary research program and demonstrate leadership in the field of environmental communication. Applicants must have a strong scholarly foundation in communication and media studies in conjunction with related disciplinary knowledge in climate science, sustainability, and/or water resources. Experience working with government, non-governmental institutions, Indigenous Peoples, and/or communities is considered an asset. In addition to maintaining an active externally funded research program, the successful candidate will be expected to supervise graduate students and teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the Department of Communication, Media and Film and the Department of Geography, and collaborate with fellow transdisciplinary scholars. The candidate will also demonstrate leadership in service, collaboration, and mentorship within the University and the community. This is an excellent opportunity to build and develop an innovative research program within a dynamic and collaborative environment. A competitive salary and an attractive start-up package will be provided. The successful candidate at the Assistant Professor (Research) level must demonstrate emerging strength in the field of environmental communication, as evidenced by impactful publications or other forms of scholarly activity, a record of securing competitive external research funding, and effectiveness in teaching at the university level. Position Requirements: * PhD in Communication and Media Studies, Geography, or related discipline * A strong record of research and knowledge mobilization * A proven ability to obtain research funding * Demonstrated strengths in teaching in related areas * Engagement with local, national, and international professional and other communities How to Apply: Interested individuals are encouraged to submit an application online via the `Apply Now? link and include in one combined PDF: * Curriculum vitae, * Statement outlining a proposed transdisciplinary research program, * Evidence of teaching effectiveness through a teaching dossier, * Evidence of collaboration/engagement with professional and other communities * Reprints of two (2) representative academic publications, * Names and contact information for three referees. Information about programs and research in the Department of Communication, Media, and Film can be found at our website. Information about programs and research in the Department of Geography can be found at our website. Closing Date: February 2, 2024 Questions about this opportunity shall be directed to: Dr. Andrea Freeman (geoghead at ucalgary.ca) and Dr. Samantha Thrift (cmfhead at ucalgary.ca). Using a reception-based approach that combines discourse analysis and textual analysis with cultural history, Imagining the Method explores the interpretive landscape of US popular culture to show how it has yielded a discursive construction of Method acting and actors?what I call ?methodness??that diverged from historical Method philosophies and practices long ago and has in fact eclipsed them in American popular culture. I investigate how prevailing understandings of the so-called Method created an exclusive brand for white, male actors while simultaneously associating such actors with rebellion and marginalization. Drawing on extensive archival research from more than a dozen repositories, this book offers a revisionist history of the Method that shines a light on the cultural politics of methodness and the still-dominant assumptions about race, gender, and screen actors and acting that inform how we talk about performance and performers. I have included several reviews of the book below, as well as a link to the introduction UTP has generously made available for free. You can get 40% off Imagining the Method now with code UTXGIFTS. I am more than happy to do in-person or online book/author events. I'm available for in-person and virtual class visits as well. Just email me (justin-rawlins at utulsa.edu) if you are interested and we will make it happen. Thank you for your time and consideration. Take care! Justin -- Justin Owen Rawlins, Ph.D. (he/him/his) Asst. Prof. of Media Studies and Film Studies University of Tulsa [located on Mvskoke land] Faculty Advisor and Executive Producer, TU Media Lab Book: Imagining the Method More: justinowenrawlins.com Imagining the Method introduction here Reviews of Imagining the Method: Imagining the Method is an impressively original, carefully researched, and consistently persuasive demystification of America?s most celebrated acting ?school.? The book is valuable not only for its informative history of theater and movies but also for its recognition that the best way to understand ?methodness? is to study the discourse surrounding it. Every chapter brims with insights and well-written commentary, especially regarding the implicit social and identity politics behind popular ideas of Method acting. There are also surprises: Who knew, for example, that John Wayne could be so interesting to discuss in this context? Highly recommended. ~James Naremore, author of Acting in the Cinema If it is true that ?acting is the art of the private made public,? then it is also true that we tend to focus on the private aspects of the definition to the exclusion of all else. Thank goodness, then, that we have Justin Rawlins, whose Imagining the Method looks squarely at that ?public,? examining how the landscape of response to Method acting shapes acting itself. By limning sources as disparate as gossip columns, studio memos, fan magazines, and celebrity profiles, Rawlins carves out a space for the ever-evolving public interpretations and mythologies that surround Method acting and argues conclusively that this discourse is as important to the history of acting as any work of art of performance. If you care about the evolution of twentieth-century screen performance, you should read this book. ~Isaac Butler, author of The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act This is an exciting and highly innovative analysis and historicization of Method acting and "methodness" in American cinema. Drawing on wider discourses, paratexts, biography, and contextual setting, Imagining the Method powerfully demonstrates the ways in which Method acting was produced and circulated outside or beyond the screen texts themselves. ~Sean Redmond, author of Liquid Space: Science Fiction Film and Television in the Digital Age -- Justin Owen Rawlins, Ph.D. (he/him/his) Asst. We look forward to receiving your submission! Dr. Christoph Brunner Assistant Professor for Philosophy of Media and Technology Erasmus School of Philosophy Full Announcement and Link to the Application Portal https://www.eur.nl/en/vacancies/phd-position-full-time-4-years-esphil Application Deadline February 8 2024, 23h55 CET The "Aesthetic Transformations in Decolonial Media Practices? Project Decolonization has become an almost omnipresent cipher in contemporary art discourses and increasingly across the humanities. On the one hand the ?decolonial turn? in the arts and humanities signals a reference to these situated struggles against colonial violence. On the other hand, its adaptation expresses the importance to critically revisit acclaimed practices and sets of knowledge considering their (often implicit) colonial heritage. While the focus of either approach foregrounds the epistemic violence and need for critical revision, they rarely address the potential for challenging aesthetic conventions and understandings as part of decolonizing practices. Put differently, to decolonize means not only to change ways of thinking and doing but also to transform ways of sensing and feeling, leading towards a decolonial aesthesis. A shift in the philosophical vocabulary of aesthetics and the effects of aesthetic practices related to decolonial processes define the main interest of this PhD-project. Accordingly, the use and role of media and their impact on aesthetic experience play a central part in these processes. In different struggles for decolonization the role of digital platform media exceeds their communicational and organizational powers, pertaining to new aesthetic approaches that critically challenge Western conventions of sensing and sense-making. The envisioned PhD project will engage with media aesthetic practices in relation to processes of decolonization. It should focus on concrete and situated contexts, ideally in resonance with perspectives from the Global South, and contribute to a critical reworking of Western aesthetic categories and concepts. Translocal perspectives and critical reflections of the European context of the position?s research environment can be an integral aspect of the project. The PhD-position is located within the Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil) and part of the Human Conditions Research Group. It will also be associated with the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague. The PhD candidate will be jointly supervised by Dr. Christoph Brunner (ESPhil), Dr. Sjoerd van Tuinen (ESPhil), and Prof. Dr. Rosalba Icaza Garza (ISS). The PhD Project The candidate's primary responsibility will be to conduct research and write a PhD thesis. The candidate should also contribute to development of the field of decolonial perspectives on the philosophy of media and technology in other ways, such as by giving scholarly presentations and co-organizing reading groups and workshops. Furthermore, the PhD candidate will become part of a large and diverse community of PhD candidates, and is expected to contribute as a junior lecturer to the Erasmus School of Philosophy?s (ESPhil) educational programme. Requirements We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate with the following background and skills: ? Completed MA in philosophy or equivalent (i.e., BA in philosophy and MA in Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender or Queer Studies, STS, Anthropology), with an interest in continental philosophy, aesthetic philosophy, philosophy of media and technology, feminist philosophies, technofeminism, post-colonial theory, and digital cultures. A keen interest in the relation between media and processes of decolonization and decolonial research methodologies are an advantage. ? Excellent speaking and writing skills in English, ? Ideally, language skills concerning the region of interest in the Global South, ? Conceptual capacity, presenting, planning, and organizing and monitoring (VSNU competencies for PhDs), ? An interest to work in teams, build local and international networks, and co-organize research workshops and public events. Now accepting papers for an open panel on teaching STS and Critical Science in July in Amsterdam: Beyond "The Controversy": Making and doing within and beyond for positive transformations. Critical Science and Technology Studies teaching has taught "The Controversy" as a method for learning about the truths and myths around science and technology in our world. This panel seeks to go beyond the controversy model and bring forth papers that discuss the radical, foundational, and productive modes of STS teaching. How do you engage, for instance, processual-relational technologies? How do you make your classroom constructivist or pragmatist? How do you move into producing and doing in the classroom in a manner consistent with the stories that STS tells? How do you incorporate alternative narratives, fictums, or life-worlds into your classrooms? How do we challenge the traditional classroom models through STS? How do we challenge the bureaucratic constructs surrounding that classroom and its developments? We propose a combined panel, uniting papers and discussion into a productive dialogue. We seek papers and presentations from those who wish to speak STS to the power of the university/college classroom in the name of constructive and positive change. We hope to have a panel or two of papers and then a fishbowl discussion including those presenters and the audience, discussing and challenging the STS classroom as the locus of positive transformations spoken of in the CFP. submit here: https://nomadit.co.uk/conference/easst-4s2024/panel/14256 (you may have to login or create an acct. in the upper right corner) Thank you and hope to see you in Amsterdam Zach McDowell and Jeremy Hunsinger jeremy hunsinger Associate Professor Communication Studies Wilfrid Laurier University Fellow Balsillie School of International Affairs https://www.balsillieschool.ca/jeremy-hunsinger/ www.tmttlt.com www.cddc.vt.edu () ascii ribbon campaign - against html mail /\ - against microsoft attachments https://brill.com/view/serial/TDSS Transdisciplinary Studies:the book series Wilfrid Laurier is located on traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishnawbe and Haudenosaunee peoples. The escalating accessibility and ubiquity of digital platforms across the globe have facilitated a corresponding rise in the frequency of violence perpetrated through diverse infrastructural channels. So far, studies have observed a growing prevalence of violence executed on and through digital platforms. For example, research has emphasized that platform affordances like Feeds and DMs provide perpetrators with new avenues to exert control, intimidate, surveil, and harass women (Dragiewicz et al., 2018; Jane, 2014). Others have shown how audiovisual memes can be manipulated to expand and reproduce hate speech (Matamoros-Fern?ndez et al., 2023), along with studies exploring the distressing psychological repercussions experienced by users exposed to content featuring real-world violence (Stubbs et al., 2022). Undoubtedly, digital environments have emerged as spaces that simultaneously sustain and expand intersecting forms of symbolic violence, including racism (Jakubowicz, 2017) and gender inequality (Cepeda, 2018). They have also become battlegrounds for countering and contesting forms of material and cultural violence, such as anti-racist efforts and police accountability (Lamont-Hill, 2018), as well as digital mobilization to advocate for differently-abled individuals (Mann, 2018). Within this broad context, this special issue strives to enhance the understanding of the diverse forms, actors, and perceptions associated with online violence, serving as a crucial stride toward cultivating a healthier digital landscape. Specifically, as advocated by Dwyer (2017), we wish to emphasize the importance of contextualizing violent behavior and content within their respective cultural and historical frameworks. This call for contextualized understandings of violence arises at a time when addressing online harm necessitates a multifaceted approach, encompassing political, technical, and social dimensions, to effectively navigate the intricacies of local cultures. This significance is highlighted by Schoenebeck et al. (2023), underscoring the pivotal role of local culture as the foremost determinant of how individuals perceive violence on digital platforms. In this context, nuanced examinations of digital violence are indispensable for crafting fitting responses to the multifaceted ecologies of violence on social media. Therefore, our objective in this issue is to compile contributions that explore the impact, reach, and various manifestations of online violence as experienced and perceived within specific sociocultural contexts. Underlying the goal of this call for papers is a desire to engage with scholars who are exploring violence on digital platforms as a cultural experience (Cover, 2022) that reinforces or resists existing power structures (Marwick, 2021; McCosker, 2014). Our call welcomes scholars to delve into the stickiness of mediated violence (Zelinzer, 2023), encouraging contributions on how online harm can serve as vehicles for both productive and destructive forces within contemporary cultures. We especially encourage interdisciplinary contributions that go beyond definitional or methodological issues around violence on digital platforms and emphasize its social, political, and ethical implications (Jane, 2015) on a global scale, with a particular emphasis on non-Western contexts. Accordingly, we invite submissions that address topics including, but not limited to, the following: ? Perceptions, experiences, and actors involved in the symbiotic relationship of offline and digital violence within various sociocultural contexts. ? Perceptions, experiences, and actors involved in algorithmic violence enacted within specific communities and contextual settings. ? Perpetuation and amplification of symbolic violence through digital platforms. ? Networked violence centered around attacking and revealing the identity of digital personas (e.g., doxxing as a form of violence exacted on minoritized individuals). ? Collective mobilization and contestation to counter material and symbolic violence on digital platforms. ? Escalating endorsement of violence as a method for collective mobilization. ? Digital resistance of platform and algorithmic bias. *Information for authors* Potential contributors should submit a 1,200-word abstract (excluding references), a 100-word bio, and the corresponding author's contact information to the guest editors. Feel free to consult the special issue editors about your article ideas and potential angles or approaches. After the abstracts have been selected, authors will be invited to submit a full paper. Please note that acceptance of an abstract does not guarantee publication, given that all papers will go through the journal?s peer review process. *Abstract structure* The extended abstract should present a coherent narrative on online violence while highlighting how the authors respond to the special issue call. It must emphasize the distinctive contributions of the study and provide an introduction to the empirical case study being explored. Furthermore, the abstract should outline the research methods employed and provide a clear indication within the findings section of the current stage of the work, whether it is still to be completed, in development, or at the writing phase. We invite submissions from scholars in a broad range of disciplines, and encourage submissions from Junior Faculty, Post-Doctoral Students and Ph.D. Students Limited funding may be available for selected participants to cover travel and accommodation costs. More details provided below and at https://www.lteclab.com/post/symposium-workshop-the-law-of-giving ==================================================== ???????????????????????????????????????Call for Papers Symposium and Workshop June 25-27, 2024 University of Windsor (Ontario, Canada) The Law of Giving: An Interdisciplinary Inquiry into the Ecosystem and Legal Implications of Crowdfunding and Personal Donation Platforms Deadline to submit abstract for paper: February 26 (3:00 pm EST) Submit abstracts here: https://uwindsor.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_d0DLSwygYnXvKEm Symposium & Workshop Synopsis Crowd funding and personal donation platforms raise a constellation of issues that have garnered relatively little attention. Donation platforms such as GoFundMe or KickStarter operate multi-million-dollar businesses. This reality, alongside the several multimedia tactics that are deployed to seduce potential donors may not be transparent to them. In addition, personal donors? data can be highly sensitive information when it relates to political affiliations, religious beliefs, or is connected to oppressed minority groups at the local level or through foreign governments or organizations. The Symposium aims to bring together scholars from diverse disciplines, including law, communication and media studies, sociology, anthropology, economics, business, and political science, to reflect on the multifaceted dynamics of crowd funding and personal donation platforms and practices shaped by an evolving ecosystem of platforms, devices, data collection practices, political climates, social norms, fundraiser needs, donor motivations, and regulatory frameworks. Zones of inquiry include the following: * What incites personal donors to give, and what are their perceptions with respect to ventures, causes, political movements calling for fundraising? * What is the personal donor in law? (i.e. the nature of the transactions performed, privacy and personal data implications, legal protections against deception and fraud, tax treatment incentives, among other considerations). * When does a personal donor become an investor? * How are communication, social media, digital platforms (GoFundMe, Kickstarter, etc..) impacting personal donations both from the perspective of fundraisers and personal donors? * What are the social dynamics and cultural factors that influence the success of crowdfunding campaigns? * What types of industries (creative, cultural, educational, healthcare etc.) or causes (humanitarian, emergency relief, political, etc.) resort to personal donations and what are considerations specific to each of those industries or causes? * What are the opportunities and pitfalls for inventors and start-up companies resorting to crowdfunding and online donation platforms to subsidize the development of their new technology or product? * What are the narratives, tools, methods deployed by fundraisers? When are such narratives justifiable and laudable, and when are they deceptive, misleading, or fraudulent? * What is the level of accountability and transparency to which fundraisers, digital donation platforms and other intermediaries are or should be subject to? * Is there a need for greater protection of donors? good will and more generally of the public? * How do governments support some fundraisers (e.g. tax breaks, interests in charity reliance, etc.) and ban others? (e.g. security surveillance, banking and finance regulation, criminal sanctions) * ?What should the extent of state control be over eligible causes for tax purposes and proscribed ones? * What are the human rights implications (e.g. potential discrimination, constraints on right of association, liberty) of such government regulations? The Symposium and Workshop?s main goal is to further develop a research agenda in this area of study through the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach, gathering researchers across different disciplines and with different perspectives to address these challenging and critical questions. The selected participants will be invited to contribute to a book project / collection of essays to be published in a leading academic journal/press. ==================================================== Dr. Vincent Manzerolle Associate Professor | Undergraduate Program Chair Department of Communication, Media & Film University of Windsor ---------------------------- Fall 2023 Office Hours: Thursdays 2:30 - 4:30 Location: 4113 Lambton Tower -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please share with your networks. The 2024 edition of the Child and Teen Consumption (CTC) Conference will be held in Toronto (Canada) and hosted by York University, October 16-18, 2024. The theme of the 11th Child and Teen Consumption Conference is Playing with Borders. The borders and boundaries of young people?s cultural worlds are messy and in flux, especially in the spaces of consumer culture, digital culture and media culture. From the borders between the analog and the digital, the authentic and the branded, the global and the local, play and labour to, food and fun, young people contest, resist, negotiate, push and play with the boundaries in the between. We invite research and approaches that interrogate the concepts and definition of children?s and teen's ?play?, and how young people themselves ?play? in mediated and digitized spaces. This theme is dedicated to the critical study of issues relevant to child and teen consumption, with methods and perspectives drawn from across the humanities and qualitative social sciences. We welcome applications from any discipline, department, or field. We are especially eager to receive applications that approach such questions from critical perspectives that centre marginalized selves: queer, trans, feminist, crip, antiracist, abolitionist, decolonial, Indigenous, diasporic, transnational, and so on. Presentations may examine a variety of topics including, but not limited to: * Branding and marketing of young people * Children and sustainability (SDG) * Children?s mediated cultures * Children?s rights and justice * Climate change * Consumer culture * Consumer desires * Digital literacies * Digital technologies * Disability and play * Families and consumer culture * Food cultures * Gender and/or race in consumer culture * Global migration * Historical approaches to consumption and play * Identities and consumer culture * LGBTQIA2+ youth * Material cultures * New methodologies in children and consumption * Play and Fun * Poverty and Scarcity * Policy on marketing and advertising * Social media practices and cultures * Sociology of food * War, poverty and food insecurity for children We are accepting applications for 15-20 minute individual presentations or organized panels of 3-4 speakers. Please see the attached CFP for full details. The conference website can be found here. Applications are due tomorrow: 30 January 2024. Please email childrenandteen at yorku.ca with any questions. Montreal How have Gramscian categories been appropriated in our global context and how do they continue to be relevant for the contemporary moment? With the spread of his ideas throughout the world, the name of Antonio Gramsci has acquired an impressively wide range of uses and meanings. Building on the experience of Rethinking Gramsci 2023, this year's edition explores the reception and interpretation of Gramscian insights around the globe. It did not take long for Gramsci?s innovative interpellation of orthodox Marxism to transcend its original context and gain centrality within what would become Western Marxism. The reception of his ideas among the English Marxists, for example, helped to give shape to the cultural Marxism of figures like Raymond Williams and Stuart Hall. Furthermore, Gramscian ideas formed the foundation of Neo-Marxist thought and practice, as expounded in seminal works like Mouffe and Laclau?s Hegemony and Socialist Strategy. Subaltern scholars from South Asia, for their part, imbued Gramsci?s concept of the subaltern with new connotations and applications, while postcolonial thinkers gave regional inflections to his legacy and re-signified it within their own particular struggles. Rethinking Gramsci 2024: Global Perspectives on Gramsci intends to explore the myriad uses and meanings of Gramsci from various perspectives and contexts throughout the world. We encourage theoretical and empirical approaches from any number of possible standpoints, be they academic, practical, or artistic. The conference will be held in hybrid mode from May 8th to May 10th 2024. The in-person talks will be at the Istituto di Cultura Italiana, in Montreal, Canada. We are currently accepting paper proposals. Please send a titled abstract (max. 500 words), short biography, and keywords to rethinkinggramsci at gmail.com before February 7st. Abstracts may be in French or English. Please visit rethinkinggramsci.com for further information on our projects. The Technopolitics of Refusal symposium, U of Toronto Mississauga, March 5-6 Message-ID: [?EXTERNAL] Log Out! The Technopolitics of Refusal International symposium at the University of Toronto Mississauga, March 5-6, 2024 The Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology is organizing a symposium on the technopolitics of refusal, with Nicole Charles (U of Toronto), Leopoldina Fortunati (U of Udine), Jilly Boyce Kay (Loughborough U), Gavin Mueller (U of Amsterdam), Sarah Sharma (U of Toronto), Rinaldo Walcott (U at Buffalo), plus a set of theory pills by U of Toronto PhD students, and a pre-conference film screening of Machines in Flames with director Andrew Culp (California Institute of the Arts). The symposium is organized by Julie Chen, Alessandro Delfanti, and Sarah Sharma. Quit. Strike. Break. Nap. Disconnect. Withdraw. Drink. Detox. Trip. Abolish. Play. Luxuriate. Escape. We gather together for one day to acknowledge a desire to remove oneself from the grip of 24/7 techno-capitalism as it intersects with patriarchy and white supremacy. But we are stymied by the recognition that tactics of refusal are both scarce and plenty, sometimes competing and often contradictory. And we insist that without understanding techno-politics there is no refusal. Logging out en masse during a strike against a gig economy app is the contemporary equivalent of dropping the tools on a shop floor. The Luddites organized to smash the looms that were threatening their livelihood. Black fugitivity seeks liberation and autonomy both in and against the digital world. Abolitionists seek not a new technology or a strategy but a new structure. Incels operate underground but log on to organize against feminism and the gains of others fighting for civil liberties. Technology is not a tool for either disappearance or empowerment; it is not given, but rather a strategic environment in which to maneuver. Acknowledging that refusal has a technopolitics, we ask: what can be logged out from, when, and how? In order to expand our understanding of refusal, PhD students will deliver 5-minute ?theory pill? talks that target a number of concepts that revolve around the symposium theme: Idleness (Seungwoo Baek), Touch Grass (Sarah Gram), Obfuscation (Mathew Iantorno), Tang Ping (Yuxing Yolanda Zhang), Disconnection (Nelanthi Hewa), Buddha-style (Hiu-Fung Chung), Shelter (Kaushar Mahetaji), Sleep (Andr? Best, Miranda Cultural Production and Everyday Life Series editors: Miranda Campbell (Toronto Metropolitan University) and Benjamin Woo (Carleton University) What happens to our view of culture and creativity when we ground it at the level of everyday life ? something that is produced by people in particular contexts? The Cultural Production and Everyday Life series seeks to expand the study of culture to include a broader range of producers, practices, and predicaments while also moving beyond a blockbuster or superstar view of culture and creativity ? a more limited notion that culture is good for the economy. Alongside being a source of livelihoods, cultural production is also a way for us to know ourselves, each other, and the world ? a mode of engagement or disengagement, an orientation or an ethos. This view of culture and creativity is a lens to register the processes of creating ? and the intersections of social, economic, and cultural forces that ultimately shape products or outputs ? but juicier analyses might be found by foregrounding the process or the lived experience, rather than the product in itself. Working through, mapping, or registering relationships between sectors, actors, policies, and cultural forms gives rise to a messier account of cultural production, circulation, and reception. Cultural Production and Everyday Life is conceived as a series of short, accessibly written, print and open-access edition pamphlets of approximately 30,000?65,000 words that foreground such questions as: ? What are the enabling conditions that allow people to keep doing and making what they are doing and making? ? What contexts inform the cultural form that is being made? How are these contexts impacted by flows of power? ? How is a cultural form experienced, and what impact does it have on the context that informed it? ? If expansion and even longevity might not necessarily be the best indicators of success, how else can cultural importance and value be registered? It publishes contributions that read either as manifestoes for new directions for studying the practices and contexts that shape the production of media, communication and culture, or as focused vignettes exploring particular sites, spaces, and practices in rich, empirical detail. Monographs, dialogues, forums, or other alternative formats are all welcomed. Potential topics might include, but are not limited to: ? Conceptual frameworks for approaching cultural production as lived experience; ? Forms of sociality, economic activity, or both emerging in relation to creative practices; ? Experiences of particular workers, consumers, fans, audiences, or residents in relation to cultural production and creative practice; ? Collectives, organizations, spaces, scenes, and unions that support cultural production; ? Ecological analysis of contemporary or historical forms of cultural production, informal, under-attentioned, or celebrated forms of creative practice; ? and Community-making and care as forms of cultural production. All submissions should incorporate an intersectional analysis in their arguments. Publications in this series will be both print editions and open access ebooks, and, in dialogue with the series editors and Concordia University Press, the format can be tailored to suit the particular focus of the project. The purpose of this meeting is to bring together scholars, journalists, and others working in the area of developing a more engaged journalism in Canada to see what we can learn from each other. By engaged journalism, we mean journalism that aims to build audience engagement with content (Batsell, Engaged Journalism, 2015), but also journalism that works to create relational engagement with communities (Robinson, How Journalists Engage, 2023) ? as well as all the other ways in which journalists have been innovating around these questions. In this meeting, we hope to learn from journalists about what they?re doing, and what direction they expect this movement to take in Montreal and in Canada. We also hope to discuss what questions scholars have addressed that could help journalists with this work, and what questions journalists have that they hope scholars could take on. Finally, we hope to bring in community members, funders and other stakeholders interested in the role that journalism does and could play in our democracy. The event will begin with a social gathering in a central location in Montreal on the evening of June 16. We will spend all day on June 17 on Concordia University?s downtown campus discussing and learning from each other on this topic. Details and schedule to come. CFP: The Legacy of The Tragically Hip >From 1984 to 2017, The Tragically Hip released 13 studio albums and achieved the status of the best-selling Canadian band in Canada. The final tour of the band in 2016, with lead singer Gord Downie dying of brain cancer, culminated in a concert on August 20, 2016, which was watched on television and online by 11.7 million Canadians. Since the passing of Downie, some hagiographic work, such as Michael Barclay's The Never-Ending Present: The Story of Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip (2018) and the documentary Long Time Running (2017), has assessed the history of the band, but there has yet to be a comprehensive academic assessment of The Tragically Hip and its legacy in music, film, television, and other facets of Canadian popular culture. Our workshop aims to correct this absence, and we are partnering with McGill-Queen's University Press to publish the best new research from the workshop as a book. The legacy of The Tragically Hip presents no shortage of apparent contradictions. The band was often hailed as an exemplification of "Canadian" culture, and yet its fan base did not reflect the demographic diversity of Canada. Similarly, the Hip merchandise foregrounded hypernationalism, while the songs they wrote were more ambiguous or antagonistic toward Canadian nationalism. One could also interrogate the juxtaposition of the Hip's status as a prototypical Canadian band with the late-life appeal from Gord Downie for reconciliation with the Indigenous people of Turtle Island. Downie's solo album Secret Path and The Gord Downie and Charlie Wenjack Foundation, which raises money for reconciliation-oriented projects, have been the subject of both praise and condemnation. How would one categorize the influence of the Hip on Canadian popular music or culture at large? This workshop is interested in more than just the music of The Tragically Hip. We want to explore the band's multimodal performativity, as well. The Hip came of age during the rise of MTV, MuchMusic, and the music video. The band was also known for its live performances, which often included improvisational lyrics from Downie such as in the famous "Killer Whale Tank" rendition of "New Orleans is Sinking." The Hip also performed at the infamous Woodstock '99. The band also made contributions to film and television, such as Men With Brooms (2002) and The Trailer Park Boys, and Downie released a poetry collection called Coke Machine Glow (2001). We are looking for 150- to 200-word abstract proposals for 15-minute presentations. The workshop will take place at the University of Lethbridge on May 11, 2024. Proposals are due before midnight on February 17, 2024. Please send your abstract and a CV to thehipworkshop at gmail.com. Saturday March 2, 6:30PM and Sunday, March 3, 1:30 PM, the feature documentary, ANALOGUE REVOLUTION: HOW FEMINIST MEDIA CHANGED THE WORLD (93 mins.; Dir. Marusya Bociurkiw 2023) will have two showings at Hot Docs Cinema, 506 Bloor St W. Tickets for Toronto screenings availablehere: Stick around after the March 2nd screening for a panel discussion on feminist archives, media and the state of feminist activism in Canada, moderated by filmmaker and professor Min Sook Lee, and featuring some of the film?s interviewees: Leela Acharya (Diva Magazine 1988-1996); mediamaker Theo Jean Cuthand (?Lessons in Baby Dyke Theory? 1995),video artist Lisa Steele, (?Birthday Suit?, 1974), Zainub Verjee, founder of InVisible Colours Women of Colour Film Festival (1989), and film director Marusya Bociurkiw. ANALOGUE REVOLUTION traces the rise and fall of analogue feminist communications preceding the MeToo era. From Halifax to Vancouver, feminist storytellers of the 1970s to 90s took hold of analogue technologies, documenting everything from racism in the women's movement, to how to insert a diaphragm. Rare archival footage of pro-choice demonstrations in the 1970?s & 80's, and long-lost feminist cinema, lead to the film?s climax: draconian cutbacks to women?s organizations across Canada, following the massacre of women at ?cole Polytechnique, Montreal, 1989. The film concludes with resurgence: young BIPOC feminists creating new digital networks. The film is narrated by Canadian queer rockstar icon Carole Pope. The March 3 screening will be followed by a Feminist Scan-athon, SUNDAY MARCH 3, 4-6PM AT CSI ANNEX, 720 BATHURST. Bring your feminist/queer ephemera;we'll scan & digitize it for you. FREE. It is unsurprising then that scholars in the humanities and social sciences have used mediascapes to examine the ideological boundaries of nation-states, trace the dissemination of underlying belief systems, and distinguish between political mainstreams and extremism. While the notion of extremism and the mainstream have historically been characterized as separate realms, we ask whether preemptively making this distinction is misguided. How are the so-called ?dark corners? of the web fed by mainstream media? Mainstream or peripheral mediascapes alike are typically understood to be little more than the means by which a belief system?that is, an ideology?is transmitted. It is ideology that has historically distinguished a political movement as such. However, this relationship between ideology and the mediascape has been critically inverted since the emergence of the American Alt-Right movement in the lead-up to the 2016 national elections. With the Alt-Right movement known for online chaos agents, trolls, and conspiracy theories more so than a definite political agenda, scholars have been forced to ask: has the mediascape displaced belief as the defining characteristic of an American political movement? This special issue of Media Fields seeks to build on the work begun by the ?Alt-Right Media Literacy Series,? an online speaker series and UC-wide graduate student collective on the study of the American Alt-Right movement. We invite proposals that address these and related questions through the concept of media literacy. We define media literacy as the ability to recognize and understand the visual and linguistic coding of Alt-Right media. We ask: how do we develop literacy in the Alt-Right?s mediascape; most simply, how do we recognize Alt-Right media? Because of the online nature of Alt-Right media, and the transnational affinities of global far right movements, we insist that the stakes of this question exceed the United States context. We welcome proposals from interdisciplinary scholars whose work broadly contributes to the development of ?literacy? on the mediascape of the American Alt-Right. Other questions that might be addressed include but are not limited to: * Intersections and divergences between the Alt-Right movement, white nationalism, and fascism at large * The impact of trolling on the spread of disinformation and instances of doxxing, harassment, and targeted abuse (Gamergate, Pizzagate) * The Alt-Right as a media phenomenon. (4chan, Telegram, Gab, Rumble). * Esoteric, sardonic, anti-feminist, anti-Black, anti-muslim, or anti-semitic dimensions of Alt-Right media * Online personas: Proud Boys, Trad Wives, NPCs, Normies, Wojaks, Pepes, etc. * Definitions of the Alt-Right as a political movement, a style, or tendency * The temporality and duration of the American Alt-Right. Questions of contemporaneity and historical development. * The Alt-Right?s relationship to crisis and capitalism. Cryptocurrencies, speculative finance, and meme stocks (GameStop, AMC, r/WallStreetBets). * Comparative treatments of the Alt-Right as a transnational (Europe, Asia, Latin America, Australia) or transpolitical phenomenon. Email your abstract (250?500 words) and bio to altrightmedialiteracy at gmail.com by March 15, 2024. If you?d like to submit, please consider coming to the Alt-Right Media Literacy Series Symposium on Friday, February 16?Sunday, February 18, 2024. This free Zoom session, sponsored by mediastudies.press, marks the collection?s publication with a discussion of the work?s significance by the editors and other scholars. The American journalist Franklin Ford (1849?1918) is remembered for his ambitious (and stillborn) Thought News periodical, hatched with philosopher John Dewey. The Franklin Ford Collection, curated and introduced by Dominique Trudel and Juliette De Maeyer, takes in the full shambolic spread of Ford's thought, across news, politics, education, finance, and society at large. The collection includes nineteen documents?letters, leaflets, editorials, and treatises?with critical annotations from Trudel and De Maeyer. The works, many unpublished or rarely circulated, illustrate the core themes that animated Ford's career, including his sweeping program of press reform and his thoughts on the interconnected flows of money, transportation, and communication. mediastudies.press (https://mediastudies.press) is a scholar-led, nonprofit, no-fee open access publisher in the media, film, and communication studies fields. More details here: https://lnkd.in/gx4UMWBB This book questions the predominance of ?media abundance? as a guiding concept for contemporary mediated politics. The authors argue that media abundance is not a universal condition, and that certain individuals, communities, and even nations can more accurately be referred to as media scarce ? where access to media technologies and content is limited, highly controlled, or surveilled. Through case studies that focus on guerilla militants, incarcerated Indigenous people, and cold war?era infrastructure, including Soviet ?closed? or ?secret? cities and Canadian nuclear bunkers, the book?s chapters interrogate how the once media scarce later ?speak? to ? and can be heard by ? the predominant, abundant media culture. Drawing from several art projects and diverse cultural sites, the book highlights how media scarce communities negotiate and otherwise narrate their place in the world, their past experiences and lives, and escape from subjugation. To better understand media scarce politics, the book asks how and when communities become ? by accident or force, by choice or necessity ? media scarce. This innovative and insightful text will appeal to students and scholars around the world working in the areas of media and politics, art and politics, visual studies, surveillance studies, and communication studies. -- Greg Elmer Professor of Communication & Culture, Professional Communication Bell Media Research Chair Co-Director, Infoscape Research Lab Toronto Metropolitan University ORCID: 0000-0002-5372-3072 New Book just published! [The Politics of Media Scarcity book cover] "The Politics of Media Scarcity provides an engaging account of the complex double nature of media scarcity as both a form of marginalization and political practice for emancipation. Universit? catholique de Louvain Deadline : May 15th 2024 Contact : info-redmil at uclouvain.be Website : https://sites.uclouvain.be/redmil/ CONTEXT The rise of new technologies is shaking up the way people interact with digital media and information. The recent and widespread release of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and applications sparked a lot of questions about their impact on users and the societies in which they live. Such potential changes need to be put into a historical perspective: with each technological innovation came hopes and fears related to their putative effects on society, often through the lens of techno-determinism. From mass media to the information age, to digital transmedia, to generative AI, the world contemplated the dawn of the information society and the democratization of access to knowledge, the advent of citizen participation for all, or the potential of persistent virtual worlds (the ?metaverse?), transhumanism and augmented reality. At the same time, as many concerns have grown across social discourses on media, information, and technology: from screen passivity and addictions to media violence and pornography, from online sexual predators and cyberbullying to fake news and conspiracy theories, from infobesity to generalized data surveillance and the collapse of our democratic societies in the post-truth era, etc. At each of these stages, individuals and social groups have developed various forms of literacies to thrive in a world populated with these technologies and to mitigate their potential deleterious effects. With every significant technological innovation, a need to reassess the role of media / information / digital literacies arises and, with it, the temptation to reinvent them to "keep pace" with evolving technologies. With such reinvention comes the risk of changing the target, scattering the benefits of educational initiatives, and losing sight of the whole picture of what (new) literacies are and what they support. CHARTING THE (DIS)CONTINUITIES IN LITERACIES The theme for this year?s edition of the ReDMIL summer school is: ?Charting the (dis)continuities in literacies?. We wish to inject a historical dimension into our examination of research in media / information / digital literacy and devote some of our attention to the changes in media, media practices, audiences and user communities, but also in imaginaries and narratives that embody the hopes and fears we place in media and information technology. We want to ask what these changes force us to reconsider in research on media / information / digital literacy, how they are accompanied by changes in the way we theorize media, information, technology and literacies, the way we conceive our research methods, our epistemologies, and our axiological positions. In reflecting on these developments, we are more attentive to continuities than to chasms and so-called paradigm shifts. Our summer school intends to bring together young researchers who are challenged by these issues with the objective of considering these questions in a long-term perspective. ? How can research account for generational changes in people?s relationship to media without getting muddled up in the use of pseudo-concepts (e.g. the myth of the ?digital native?)? ? How are age-old conceptual debates (protectionism vs. empowerment, cognitive vs. socio-cultural approaches to literacies, the complementarity of critical thinking and participation, ?) challenged or reinvigorated by the evolution of digital media practices? ? How do our methods evolve to integrate the aspiration for more inclusiveness, for an increased attention to marginalized or under-represented user communities, or for the decolonization of the media? ? What epistemologies can we devise when agentivity and knowledge may no longer be the prerogative of the human being alone? ? What kind of new avenues for research do technical innovations open? ? What are the disciplinary convergences that these evolutions call for? How can interdisciplinarity be channelled to strengthen research on new literacies? SCOPE AND GOAL OF REDMIL 2024 LITERACY DOCTORAL SUMMER SCHOOL In this context, the ReDMIL 2024 doctoral summer school aims at contributing to the convergence between digital, media and information literacy research by bringing together researchers from all three communities, to foster the scientific debate and explore connections between them. The summer school is an international training program that will alternate between framing presentations by senior researchers and the in-depth discussion of emerging research by participating PhD students. Five keynote speakers have confirmed their participation to the 2024 edition: ? Gianna Cappello, University of Palermo (Italy) ? Normand Landry, Universit? TELUQ (Canada), ? Julian Sefton-Green, Deakin University (Australia), ? Leo Van Audenhove, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium), ? Emily Vraga, University of Minnesota (USA). The summer school is organized on September 9th-12th, 2024 by the Groupe de Recherche en M?diation des Savoirs (Knowledge Mediation Research Group) at the Universit? catholique de Louvain, Belgium, in partnership with the Canada Research Chair in Media Education and Human Rights (Universit? TELUQ). The goal of this summer school is to allow PhD students engaged in the field of digital literacy, media literacy or information literacy: ? to benefit from the expertise of renowned researchers in their field, though theoretical and methodological presentations; ? to present their own research to an audience composed of these experts, as well as other PhD students and researchers; ? to work collectively to the enhancement of their research work with other participants; ? to improve their knowledge of the research undertaken by their peers. The Summer School will start with a poster session (Sept. 9th), followed by six half-day workshops (Sept. 10th-12th) on the following topics: ? theoretical frameworks in the study of digital, media and information literacies; ? epistemological issues in new literacies research; ? methods for observing, documenting, and assessing literacies and their associated educational practices and policies; ? designing research with social relevance and valorizing research results in society. Each half-day workshop will open with one plenary talk by renowned experts, followed by a session focused on the research work of the participating PhD students, exploring them from the perspectives developed in the plenary talks. In addition to presenting an outline of their work at the opening poster session, each participating PhD student will have the opportunity to present their work in up to two sessions, on two different topics. In relation to the theme of the 2024?s edition ?From mass media to generative AI: Charting the (dis)continuities in literacies?, participants will be invited to question the axiological positions that underlie their research. The Summer School will also allow for numerous informal interactions (including a networking dinner) between experts, researchers, and PhD students. Participation and presentation from PhD students at the ReDMIL Summer School will be rewarded by 5 ECTS (or equivalent) for their doctoral training. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS The summer school is targeted at PhD students who develop their research in the following areas: ? the study of new literacies: observing, documenting and/or assessing new literacies; ? the study of educational initiatives in media literacy, information literacy or digital literacy practiced by a variety of actors (teachers and educators, employers, associations, parents, media and tech companies, ?); ? the study of public policies in the fields of digital, media and information literacies at any geographical level; ? or any other topic related to digital literacy, media literacy, or information literacy. PhD students wishing to present and discuss their doctoral research at the summer school are invited to submit an application, including the following: ? A brief curriculum vitae (one to two pages); ? A presentation of their doctoral research in a maximum of 1500 words (references not included), including the following four sections: ? Problem or societal issue that their thesis intends to answer; ? Research question, hypotheses (in the case of a hypothetico-deductive approach) and theoretical framework of their thesis; ? Data collection and analysis method; ? Expected results: the usefulness of their research, from an academic and/or societal point of view (e.g. for the world of education, for the political world, for the media industry). ? An abstract of the presentation of their doctoral research in a maximum of 300 words. Applications must be sent in the form of a single file (word or pdf) including CV and presentation to this address info-redmil at uclouvain.be by May 15th, 2024 at the latest. Candidates will be personally notified of the acceptance of their participation on June 5th. REGISTRATION Students whose application has been accepted and researchers (whether doctoral or not) wishing to attend the summer school without presenting their work will have to pay a participation fee of 120? to partially cover the organizing costs of the events. The participation fee includes lunches, coffee breaks, and the midsummer school dinner. Participants will have to cover their own travel and accommodation costs. For the participants affiliated with institutions based in the European Union, this summer school should fall within the conditions to obtain an ERASMUS+ travel funding. Participants are invited to get in touch with the ERAMUS+ coordinator of their home institution. Doctoral students for whom these costs w ould be an obstacle to participation can contact the organization directly to try to find a solution. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As per the CFP: The consequences of human-induced climate change, the extinction of flora and fauna, pollution, environmental predation, and injustices are causing a spectrum of constraints, shrinkage, alteration and loss (Murphy, 2017; Elliott, 2018; Dokumaci, 2023). Carbon-concerned researchers, professionals, and citizens are advancing necessary shifts, including the design and implementation of alternative forms of communicating and gathering. The webinar?s aim is to demystify strategies for professional networking (such as during Congress this June). Many graduate students have not had the opportunity over the pandemic years to learn and practice in-person networking. As well, depending on someone?s personality type and/or background, there might be greater feelings of uncertainty in professional networking. This webinar will look to build the following skills to fill this potential gap: * Writing a 24-month soft- and hard-networking strategy and control plan (using Notion, Excel, Excel?s Visio integration, and Obsidian for CRM and visual mapping purposes); * The amoeba method of professional networking and change-making; * Techniques for networking at meal tables; and * An easy-to-follow checklist using Excel for pre-conference preparation and post-conference follow-up for nurturing your network. Message-ID: [?EXTERNAL] Today the Global Media & Internet Concentration Project is releasing two new reports that portray recent development and concentration trends in a swathe of communication, internet and media industries: - The Brazil report was prepared by: Guillermo Mastrini; Mart?n Becerra, Professors, Universidad Nacional de Quilmes; Ana Bizberge, Professor, Universidad Nacional de San Mart?n; Ornela Carboni, Professor, Universidad Nacional de Quilmes; Agust?n Espada, CONICET; Florencia Sosa, Universidad Nacional de Quilmes. - The Switzerland report was prepared by Gabriele Balbi, Professor; Michele Martini, Post-Doctoral Fellow; Petra Mazzoni, Riccardo Ferrigato and Ely Leuthi, all Ph.D. students, at the Faculty of Communication, Culture and Society, USI Universit? della Svizzera italiana. These follow editions we have published in the last few months on the state of media and internet concentration in Canada, Italy, France and South Korea. Others will be out soon, with the end goal a library of regularly updated reports for all of the nearly 40 countries that make up the GMICP. These reports allow us to detect trends across global media markets: - Both Switzerland and Brazil exhibit greater stability ? or at least a slower decline ? in the traditional media sectors than conventional wisdom suggests. - The Covid years represented stagnation overall in both countries, with big declines in advertising-supported media offset by growth in online media services - Concentration levels in the telecommunications and core internet services are remarkably high in Switzerland and Brazil - In both countries, just 3 companies make-up almost 90% of the wireless sector Of course, sharp differences also abound: - Public service media are powerful actors in the Swiss network media economy with SSR SSG boasting the largest TV audience share, and Swisscom dominant in the telecoms and internet access services market - In Brazil, while public service media is negligible, family-owned media groups control much of the traditional media market, with the Globo Group predominant amongst them And finally: - Please review any of our reports and the underlying data sets here. - We are delighted to be presenting our research at the ICA conference in Australia in June, IAMCR in New Zealand in July, and will be convening our own symposium at the University of Sydney shortly afterwards. - Finally, we invite other researchers to contribute their expertise to our efforts ? please reach out to us here. The Narwhal has an environmental focus where a "team of investigative journalists dives deep to tell stories about the natural world in Canada you can?t find anywhere else." >From the fellowship posting: "The Narwhal frequently reports on stories that deeply impact the lives of Indigenous communities, especially as many of these communities grapple with the ongoing impacts of climate change, natural resource development and environmental racism. We want to see more of these stories ? and we want to ensure they?re told more often by Indigenous journalists. That?s why we?re launching The Narwhal?s Indigenous Photojournalism Fellowship. If you wonder whether you?re the right fit for this fellowship or have questions before you fill out the application, email us at michelle at thenarwhal.ca. This 12-week course is a home for theory, discussion and implementation strategies to decolonize those traditional practices. We will be examining decolonization through four lenses: Indigenous, Black, Francophone and the Global South. Each of these sections have been developed by leading Canadian journalists with subject matter expertise: Dan David (Mohawk journalist and trainer), Desmond Cole (author and journalist), Lela Savi? (publisher, La Converse) and Shree Paradkar (Toronto Star race and gender columnist). Each will infuse their industry and lived experiences into live webinars every two weeks. This course is ideal for news consumers, journalism and communications educators and editorial leaders alike. To learn more, please contact me at shenaz.kermalli at utoronto.ca. Through shared reading, discussion, and reflection, and gathered around a shared interest in feminist theory and politics, the authors discovered a model of care within academia that helped them to sustain their opposition to dominant academic practices that are diminishing, competitive, and exploitative. In this book, the authors narrate that discovery and the realization of a desire to share in the assembling of a collective feminist survival kit. In Living a Feminist Life, Sara Ahmed offers a wide-ranging killjoy survival kit that includes books, things, tools, time, life, permission notes, other killjoys, humor, feelings, and bodies. As a response to the stress, strain, and profound grief produced by the COVID-19 pandemic, with its viral acceleration of crises already endemic to neoliberal capitalism, the authors mined an evolving cluster of decolonial feminist texts in an attempt to find meaning, encounter moving premonitions, and engage with radical instigations to thought. By co-creating a survival kit through sustained collaboration during the pandemic, they develop a sense of the value of experimentation and risk-taking and learn how to cultivate an inclusive space that allows them to express their views, reclaim accountability, and learn confidently from each other. Widening Scripts combines collaborative feminist theory, acts of care, and critical dialogue in an effort to open up decelerated, altruistic, and connected ways of doing academic work together. Endorsements ?What a killjoy joy it has been to take this book in! It teaches that care, that painstaking labour, is how we craft connections that help us to survive the harshest of worlds. Poetic, collaborative, and generous, Widening Scripts shares with its readers what can happen when we read together, creating room for each other, turning feminist texts into lively conversations. It brings home why care full practices matter all the more when we have to transform institutions to survive them and, in pandemic times, when it is hard to share the same air. I was reminded of what a gift it has been to be part of a feminist community and that however hard it is to keep fighting against injustices, it is how we find our people.? ~ Sara Ahmed, author of Living a Feminist Life, Complaint!, and The Feminist Killjoy Handbook Table of Contents Chapter 1. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Sybille Kr?mer presents the first ICCIT Annual Lecture, "The cultural history of digitization. A reflection on the 'cultural technique of flattening'": We live in a three-dimensional world, but we are surrounded by illustrated and inscribed surfaces. A history of the 'cultural technique of flattening' unfolds with the invention of pictures, writing, diagrams, and maps; this is radicalized in the ubiquity of interfaces and the smartphone. We have to interpret the anthropotechnique of flattening as a creative potential. What is the secret of its productivity? And what is the connection between the operativity of inscribed surfaces and contemporary digitalization? In response, the lecture develops three theses: (1) The productivity of flattening is based on being a medium that can convert time into space and vice versa. (2) Embryonic forms of the digital already exist alongside alphanumeric writing: Use of computers and the digital can be separated. (3) The essence of contemporary digitalization is based on new forms of dealing with written data. This can be illustrated by the chatbots of Artificial Intelligence. About the speaker: Sybille Kr?mer was Full Professor for Philosophy at the Free University in Berlin; since retirement (2019) Guest Professor Institute Cultures and Aesthetics of Digital Media, Leuphana University Lueneburg. Previously a member of the German ?Scientific Council? (2000-2006), of the European Research Council (2007-2014)); member of the ?Senat? of the ?German Research Foundation? Sing for the Competition and go to Prison: Accounting for the Force of (Non-IP) Law in the Study of Cultural Work Prof. Matt Stahl Faculty of Information & Media Studies, Western University April 11, 1-3pm Faculty of Information, University of Toronto Bissell Building, 140 St. George, St. room BL 507 Hosted by the Faculty of Information and the Department of Geography By enforcing labour and debt contracts, law does for capital what capital cannot do for itself. This project proposes a genealogical account of law?s force in the relations of capitalist cultural production. It aims to shed light on the relationship of cultural labour?s legality?the state of its conformity to law?to its economic productivity?the state of its conformity to markets. Today this legal legacy reveals itself most prominently in controversy over non-compete and non-disclosure agreements in the high tech and entertainment industries as well as other sectors. Non-competes and NDAs point to deeper politics at issue, not least the right to quit. This presentation will examine the historical basis for these sorts of contract enforcement mechanisms in a Victorian contest over a prima donna?s human capital, their coupling with creditor-debtor relations in the early 20th century sharecropping system of the U.S. South, and how, in combination, these two modes of labor control have structured professional recording artistry since its inception. --- Nicole Cohen, PhD Associate Professor Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology (ICCIT) & Faculty of Information University of Toronto nicolescohen.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
