As a field, game studies has only begun the work of understanding these matters because race also shapes the study of games. Game studies is built on colonial logics and animated by white supremacy. The major problematics of the field (ludus v narrative, game v player, pro-social v antisocial) are premised in Western epistemic traditions. And games researchers largely focus on the hegemony of play, the games and gaming practices of the presumed audience of white male players imagined by the mainstream games industry (Fron, Fullerton, Moire, and Pearce 2007). Race in Games and Game Studies will be a two day conference dedicated to exploring how race impacts games and game studies. The conference will be hosted online December 7-8, 2023 and registration is free. We will feature conventional paper panels as well as plenary discussion panels focused on future directions for research at the intersections of games and race. In addition to advancing the state of games research concerning how representations, industry practices, and community norms contribute to the shifting dynamics of racial privilege and marginalization, we hope to identify the gaps and trends in recent research in this area. By outlining what is being done and what has yet to be examined closely, we hope to suggest new directions and possibilities for this work to explore and to highlight ways that researchers in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts might work together to close gaps in the field. We as eager to learn about joy and justice as we are to gain new insight into ongoing/emerging harms, and encourage participation from game scholars and/or developers from all careers stages who are working on topics at the intersection of race and games, such as: * Representations of race and/or racialized identities in games * Experiences of racial minorities in the games industry and/or gaming communities/cultures * Anti-racist and/or decolonial activism in games, game cultures, game studies, games education, and/or in the games industry * Indigenous, Black, Latine, and/or Asian/Asian-Americangames and/or game studies * Racism in games, games education, game development and/or in spaces of play * Black and/or Indigenous futurism in games * Race as a facet of intersectional identity in games and/or gaming * Racialized ontologies of games and/or play * White supremacy and/or coloniality in games and/or gaming Interested games scholars and makers are encouraged to submit abstracts for 15-20-minute-long presentations (300 words + 5 keywords) and a short bio note (100-150 words) to https://raceandgamesconf.uwaterloo.ca/openconf.php by September 15, 2023. Questions can be addressed to the organizers at race.game.studies at gmail.com. Changements climatiques et deuils in?gaux Argumentaire ? (CIS) CNRS, d?l?gation Universit? Clean Energy, Climate Justice & Indigenous Rights: From extractive, colonial capitalism to equitable, flourishing alternatives. Thursday, July 20, 2023, 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. | Registration About the talk The climate crisis calls for a massive and speedy transition away from fossil fuels towards energy systems based on renewable, clean sources like the sun, the wind and the tides. But to date, what we?re seeing is a move towards extractive, large-scale, corporate-owned for-profit models of green energy. These so-called solutions are replicating the social and environmental injustices perpetrated by the fossil fuel industry, including the rampant violation of Indigenous Rights and desecration of their lands and waters . Upholding indigenous rights and fighting for a climate just future for all requires not just a change in energy sources, but a transformation in the very systems of power, governance, worldviews and values that have driven the climate crisis. In this talk Eriel Deranger and Jen Gobby will share their own visions for what this transformation can look like and open up a discussion about how these visions can inspire and ground the work of those in the tech and innovation world. -- Professor Marcel O'Gorman, PhD University Research Chair Past President, Society for Literature, Science and the Arts (SLSA) Founding Director, Critical Media Lab Department of English University of Waterloo Waterloo, Ontario, Canada N2L 3G1 Tel: 519 888 4567 x32946 http://criticalmedia.uwaterloo.ca http://marcelogorman.net I acknowledge that I work and teach on the traditional territory of the Attawandaron (Neutral), Anishnaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples. Project Description This is a book about words?often metaphors coined by Big Tech?that fool us into thinking the digital technologies we use every day are beautiful, benign, and consequence-free. They?re not. As the writers in this edited collection will show, the digital tech that facilitates daily life has social, political, and climate consequences. But these consequences are concealed by reductive nouns and misleading metaphors, such as the cloud or AI (Hwang & Levy, 2015; Vlasits, 2017; Hogan & Vondereau, 2018; Wyatt, 2021), that are invoked to uphold the technology industry (Ignatow, 2003). Each chapter in this volume will discuss a specific technology and, crucially, a move to rename it. Collectively, we aim to subvert Big Tech?s careful branding and rechristen today?s most popular technologies in ways that point explicitly to their problems. As a whole, this book will propose alternative vocabulary to technologies in the Anthropocene, emphasizing what they actually do or perform, rather than Silicon Valley notions of what people should buy. Project Goal Critical media and communication scholars have made many calls for new language to talk about technology (Lanier, 2010; Hwang and Levy, 2015; Gillespie, 2017; Jobin and Ziewitz, 2018; Wyatt, 2018, 2021; Boucher, 2021; Wallenborn, 2022; Chown and Nascimento, 2023). This book answers these longstanding calls. Our approach to renaming technology, like Lakoff and Johnson (1980), is not necessarily to abandon the use of metaphor. But, like Sally Wyatt (2021), we know better than to be lackadaisical when it comes to language. Language philosophy tells us that words have the power to bring things into being (Austin, 1962); therefore, we need to be very careful with them. Carefulness, by which we mean practicing an ethic of care, comes down to renaming?and, therefore, reframing?the technology industry and the technologies it develops in terms of what they do, not what they appear to be. We hold this conviction: what something is is what it does (Drucker, 2013; van Dijck et al., 2018; Deibert, 2020). This means that things are best understood in terms of their unfolding and their consequences, in what they do as much as what they are. As such, the essays in this volume will discuss and catalogue aspects such as processes, byproducts, outcomes, and aftermaths. How to Submit an Expression of Interest We ask that prospective authors complete our Google form, which includes the following fields: * The technology your chapter will discuss * Its new name (can be tentative, but it will be helpful to show us what you are thinking) * Your argument, in one sentence * A 150-word synopsis Expressions of interest are due October 6, 2023. Please see the full call for a list of other key dates. Questions? Teaching materials and career videos are also available. Feel free to get in touch at banners at mcmaster.ca to obtain or share ideas and teaching materials. This will be an interesting year with lots to discuss! Summary This essential resource examines the central issues in Canadian communication policy and law, including freedom of expression, censorship, broadcasting policy, telecommunications policy, internet regulation, defamation, privacy, government surveillance, intellectual property, and more. Taking a critical stance, Sara Bannerman draws attention to unequal power structures by asking the question, whom does Canadian communication policy and law serve? The in-depth discussions consider fundamental theories for analyzing law and policy issues, such as pluralist, libertarian, critical political economy, feminist, queer, critical race, critical disability, postcolonial, and intersectional theories. Accessibly written and featuring further readings, a glossary, and a chapter on legal and policy research and citation, this book provides a superb introduction to the field for students in media studies and communications programs, while also synthesizing advanced critical analysis of key problems in Canadian communication policy and law. Bannerman?s crystal-clear prose and exhaustive research provide readers with the definitive guide to who benefits from public policy in a digital age.? ?Vincent Mosco, Queen?s University, Author of The Smart City in a Digital World ?With its robust attention to critical race theory and intersectionality, Bannerman?s book enriches scholarship in Canadian communication policy and law. The book tackles some of the most pressing communication and digital policy issues today, highlighting in particular the imbrication of power and politics and the importance of upholding the often-vexed nature of the public interest.? ?Leslie Regan Shade, Professor, Faculty of Information, University of Toronto "This exciting and innovative new text from Sara Bannerman brings a diverse range of critical perspectives to bear on enduring issues and pressing concerns in communications policy, law, and regulation in the 21st Century. The scope is as ambitious as it is impressive. At each step of the way, Bannerman deftly guides readers through the hotly contested issues that will continue to shape the terrain of intellectual property, freedom of expression, privacy and data protection, telecommunications, broadcasting, and internet regulation for years to come.? ?Dwayne Winseck, Professor, School of Journalism and Communication, Carleton University ?This work is immensely valuable in many respects?it offers an engaging introduction to a wide range of theoretical approaches that are made accessible through clear prose and compelling real-world examples. Unlike many introductory texts, which present perspectives on law and policy in a neutral fashion, this work offers a vigorous critique of Canada?s legal and regulatory communications framework?a regime that, while neutral in its face, serves to reinforce inequity and preserve the status quo.? ?Lisa Taylor, Associate Professor, School of Journalism, Ryerson University ?Sara Bannerman offers a unique primer on a range of Canadian policy and legal issues pertaining to media and communications; its expansive scope is unparalleled. What especially stands out about this book is its attention to the underlying power structures that shape policy and law, as well as its innovative approach to guiding readers through the process of legal research. This text is essential for anyone interested in how Canadian media and communications are shaped by law and policy.? ?Tamara Shepherd, Communication, Media and Film, University of Calgary ?Canada?s rapidly-changing communications system requires thoughtful analysis of both long-standing and emergent issues, from intellectual property law to telecommunications policy. Synthesizing decades of research and legal precedent, Dr. Bannerman unpacks core debates from various theoretical and normative standpoints, paying close attention to power relations and systemic bias, and offering readers a framework to engage in policy research. This is a valuable resource that connects communications policies with the lived experiences of the diverse individuals and groups who make up Canadian society.? ?Rob McMahon, Communications and Technology, University of Alberta -- Sara Bannerman, B.Mus., MA, PhD (she/her) Canada Research Chair in Communication Policy and Governance Associate Professor Department of Communication Studies & Media Arts Togo Salmon Hall, Room 302 McMaster University 1280 Main St. W. And yet, Lee McGuigan tells us in this eye-opening book, digital advertising was well underway before the widespread use of the Internet. Explaining how marketers have brandished the tools of automation and management science to exploit new profit opportunities, Selling the American People traces data-driven surveillance all the way back to the 1950s, when the computerization of the advertising business began to blend science, technology, and calculative cultures in an ideology of optimization. With that ideology came adtech, a major infrastructure of digital capitalism. To help make sense of today's attention merchants and choice architects, McGuigan explores a few key questions: How did technical experts working at the intersection of data processing and management sciences come to command the center of gravity in the advertising and media industries? How did their ambition to remake marketing through mathematical optimization shape and reflect developments in digital technology? In short, where did adtech come from, and how did data-driven marketing come to mediate the daily encounters of people, products, and public spheres? His answers show how the advertising industry's efforts to bend information technologies toward its dream of efficiency and rational management helped to make "surveillance capitalism" one of the defining experiences of public life. Lee McGuigan is Assistant Professor in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and an associate at Cornell Tech's Digital Life Initiative. He is a coeditor of The Audience Commodity in a Digital Age. Organized by the Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology (ICCIT) at University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). (TIFF) Deadline for submissions: Sunday, 1 October 2023 2024 Conference Theme: Building Alliances (A)rchival endeavors should not be about documenting the past, nor even about imagining the future?but about building a liberatory now. -Michelle Caswell, Urgent Archives: Enacting Liberatory Memory Work (2021, 13) (T)he archival impulse could be recast? as the possibility of creating alliances: between text and image, between major and minor institutions, between filmmakers, photographers, writers and computers, between online and offline practices, between the remnant and what lies in reserve, between time and the untimely. These are alliances against dissipation and loss, but also against the enclosure, privatization and thematisation of archives, which are issues of global, and immediate, concern. - Pad.ma, ?10 Theses on the Archive? (2010) https://pad.ma/documents/OH The biennial Global Audiovisual Archiving Conference is an opportunity for scholars, archivists, artists, curators, filmmakers, students, and film enthusiasts from across the world to gather and explore contemporary professional, artistic, and socio-political issues affecting audiovisual heritage today. The aim of the conference is to broaden the knowledge and connections within the global archival community, leading to new insights into the material and cultural resonances of archival approaches to sound and moving image in different parts of the world. Audiovisual archives are being redefined by the communities who care for and use them. In the 21st century, new names for archival collections and new approaches to archives are helping to shape collective histories, often informed by a plurality of regional, local, activist, and cultural communities rather than broadly based nationalist identities. These are fostering new understandings of what it means to ?decolonize memory institutions? such as public archives, cultural memory centres, galleries, and museums (Thorkelson, 2019) as well as de facto repositories or accidental archives (Cheeka, 2023) such as media distribution centres, co-ops, academic institutions, and public libraries ? not to mention all kinds of private and personal archives. The problems that smaller archives face include a lack of space for storage, funds to access digitization technologies (Declercq, 2020; Su?rez, 2021), and the specialised labour, informed by archival training in best practices that are often required to safeguard material histories, especially those carried by analogue and born-digital media (Jaillant, 2022; Liebermann, 2021; Moravec, 2021). Often these ?best practices? are drawn by richer institutions, without due consideration of or engagement with the contexts, resources, and politics of other regions. Equally important is the reuse and co-creation of media that activates archival materials in novel ways for contemporary audiences in a way that ensures their longevity. There is no doubt that the practices of ?doing archives? are ?on fire? around the world (Caswell, 2021; Chew et al., 2018; Paalman et al., 2021). The 2nd Global Audiovisual Archiving Conference invites papers and presentations in a variety of formats that address the challenges and generative opportunities afforded by diverse media archives, from those that are publicly/privately funded to those surviving on very little support. We are especially interested in marginalised audiovisual archives, whether collections vulnerable to disappearance and inaccessibility or archives that are invisible and need to come into being. Central to our conference is the importance of identifying gaps in the field, building bridges, creating archival networks, fostering collaborations (Pretlove, 2021), and uncovering or deepening alliances (Heidiger et al., 2021). Such approaches may be tied to designing practices of care (Campanini, 2023) and pedagogical approaches for the next generation of archivists, artists, activists, humanists, and historians in ways that are inclusive, expansive, liberatory, and that might reinvent and redefine archival language and protocols. The conference also explores the emergence of theoretical questions, and novel ways of understanding history through notions of entanglement (Namhila and Hillebrecht, 2022) and redefinitions of allyship and stewardship that mark a critical paradigm shift in the field of archival studies. We encourage proposals from participants located in parts of the world and on topics that are underrepresented in conferences related to audiovisual heritage. The programming committee will be especially interested in proposals that address the following topics which include but are not limited to: Specialist Archives * Human rights frameworks and archives; activist archives; social justice * Archival protocols and languages of Indigenous and other communities of traditional knowledge; living archives and ancestral memory; decolonizing practice and policy * Women?s archives and networks and feminist ethics of care * Queer LGBTQS+ archives and collaborations * Critical disabilities in the archives; building accessible archives * Mobile archival engagements with remote or underserved communities * Enriching metadata on sensitive objects; improving metadata language(s) for enhancing access and collaboration on a global scale New Approaches to Archiving * Decolonizing the archive; decolonial and postcolonial approaches to archiving and archival studies * Sustainable approaches to archiving: environments, climate change and disappearing archives, planetary archives * Identifying archives at risk and sharing resources * Developing new networks, kinships, collaborations, and alliances; sharing resources across political/cultural, economic, and geographic spheres * Transnational, transcontinental, translocal archival projects and networks * Global repatriation efforts across borders and governments; digital forms of repatriation * New approaches to archival pedagogy; training the next generation of archivists * Participatory and communal forms of archiving; building sustainable cooperative projects in AV archiving; recognizing the invisible labour(ers) at the archive * Addressing financial inequality across archives across borders in neoliberal contexts; finding alternatives to neo-colonial financial structures Theoretical and Activation Insights * Creative activations of archives through artist residencies and community collaborations * Building bridges between academic, archival, and cultural communities that use archives * Theory building: what can we learn from the new theoretical questions (ontology of the archives), and creative artistic approaches to working with archives? * The alternate histories of audiovisual heritage and culture thanks to new, inclusive archival practices * The future of archives and archiving; new approaches to digitization; digital archives, platforms, and repositories Guidelines You can submit your proposal for a single paper or panel format (panel, roundtable, poster, etc.) online via the Google Form linked below. An update on Canadian periodicals in Lantern, below! The Media History Digital Library (MHDL) catalog currently includes 2,866,284 pages of digitized books and magazines from the histories of film, broadcasting, and recorded sound. All free and open access. All ethically and legally sourced, scanned from the public domain or included with permission of the rights holder. Support Lantern As a non-profit initiative, your support is what enables us to keep building our collections. Please consider making a donation to support the Media History Digital Library. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, all contributions made in August 2023 will be matched 1-to-1. If you contribute $100, we'll receive $200 to help us continue scanning magazines and developing new ways to search, visualize, and explore the MHDL. You will notice some Canadian film industry magazines have recently been added to Lantern MHDL and the Internet Archive in just the past month. We are working to gradually add a more complete range of historic Canadian and qu?becois film, radio, and broadcasting periodicals. This effort is part of a Global task force to expand the MHDL. A great deal of material from China, France, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom have already been added. Actions are underway to add Canada to that list, to extract our national history from within its current presence in Lantern embedded within US trade journals. I will circulate a future announcement when we have reached a critical mass of Canadian materials with curated descriptions (et j'esp?re aussi des journaux fran?ais et des descriptions bilangue). In the meantime, preliminary issues of Canadian Moving Picture Digest, Canadian Film Weekly and Year Book, and Famous Players' What's New? and Famous News represent an early upload of over 130 first items. These first issues were contributed by Greig Dymond in memory of his brother, David Dymond, an avid collector of Canadian film business materials and a life-long theatre manager and showman. Thanks to Dr. Jessica Whitehead for working with Greig over the past few years to ensure these materials will be digitized and then archived. Future contributions will arrive in collaboration with the Canadian Picture Pioneers and Deborah Tiffin, final owner and publisher of Film Canada Yearbook (and inheritor of a lineage of Canadian film business publications that spanned from 1915 to 2007). If you possess personal copies of historical Canadian media periodicals, please you are welcome to contact me if you'd like to discuss options and logistics for contributing to the Internet Archive and the Media History Digital Library. My name is Mrs Monica Tkachenkov, my husband and two of my children were killed by the Russian military who invaded my country Ukraine. I am presently in the hospital as a result of the injury I sustained from a bomb that blasted in our home that left my husband and two children dead. It's still like a nightmare. I'm yet to recover from it. My husband until his death was one of the senior directors with the YENAKIYEVE IRON AND STEEL COMPANY here in Ukraine. I have a surviving daughter in Poland and her name is Zlata. I have a severe health issue and the doctors said I may not survive the injury as I have undergone multiple surgery due to the injury I sustained on the night of the attack. At this point I know my life is hanging in the balance, the doctors are doing their best to save my life but I was just told the last operation (surgery) they are to carry out on me is based on 50/50 chances to live or die. I have no one to reach out for assistance. Our friends, relatives/family members have run out of Ukraine, many have died while the lucky ones are scattered all over Europe seeking for people to help them. THE REASONS I SEEK FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE: My husband has a deposit of($12,000,000 United States Dollars ) with a Finance institution outside Ukraine. This money was moved from Ukraine to a Finance institution at the point it was obvious that Russia (Putin) soldiers were going to attack our country Ukraine. I seek your indulgence to please adopt my daughter Zlata in your care and have her grow up among your children/family under your care. I will ask the finance institution or our lawyer in charge of the funds to reach you once you assure of your sincere and honest commitment to assist my helpless and only surviving daughter Zlata, who is presently in Refugee camp in Poland. I plead with you to assist Zlata take her away from the refugee camp in Poland and give her the life she deserves being her new Father/Mother/Guardian. Zlata is a beautiful and unique girl you will love to meet, comfortable while growing up around her family before the demon Putin and his Russian soldier invade our country and destroy everything the Ukraine people labored for. You will invest 50% of the money into a profitable interest yielding business, the proceeds of the interest will be used to look after my daughter "Zlata" until she grows to maturity to value life and things around her. 10% of the amount will be a fixed deposit in a bank in Zlata's name with an instruction that the money will be accessible to her when she turns eighteen (18) years of age. 30% is for yourself and family while the remaining 10% is for miscellaneous expenses encountered in the process during the transactions. My prayer is to see my daughter again after my surgery and health situation. I will be happy and appreciate reading from your reply to the email accepting to assist my daughter have a life even when I'm gone, I believe in my heart you are a good person, my daughter is in safe hands. To find out about future screenings and media interviews, follow us on Instagram @analoguerevolutiondoc Synopsis: This feature-length documentary traces the rise and fall of analogue feminist communications that preceded the MeToo era. From Halifax to Vancouver, feminist media activists of the 1970s to 1990s took hold of cutting-edge media technology to document everything from racism in the women's movement, to how to insert a diaphragm. You?ll hear from major Canadian storytellers and activists like Studio D?s Bonnie Sherr Klein (Montreal/Vancouver) and Sylvia D. Hamilton (Nova Scotia); print collectives like Womonspace News (Edmonton) and Our Lives: Black Women?s Newspaper (Toronto). Zainub Verjee tells the story of Canada?s first women of colour film festival, InVisible Colours;Theo Cuthand describes the moral panic that surrounded their 1995 film "Lessons In Baby Dyke Theory". Rare archival footage, like African American feminist poet Audre Lorde's speech at the Third International Feminist Book Fair (Montreal 1988) and pro-choice demonstrations in the 1980's, lead to the film?s climax: draconian cutbacks to women?s and lesbian organizations across Canada, following the massacre of women at ?cole Polytechnique in Montreal, 1989. The film concludes with a resurgence: young BIPOC feminists using analogue strategies to create new feminist digital networks. About the workshop: This workshop will be facilitated by Wisdom2Action (W2A) under the direction of Fae Johnstone (she/they), and supported by three team members. Johnstone will offer after a short introduction and context setting regarding growing levels of anti-gender ideology expressed through hate and violence against women, 2SLGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, racialized, and/or other marginalized and oppressed people, or individuals who have intersecting, marginalized identities, in Canada. Johnstone will then offer insights into community-led and non-carceral responses to safety concerns. The workshop participants will be divided into breakout rooms with W2A team members present to facilitate a discussion about non-carceral and community-grounded safety planning experiences, examples, ideas, and/or ongoing campus-based concerns. Participants will return to plenary and the W2A facilitators will provide short summaries of each of the breakout groups? main points of discussion and facilitators will provide insight into translating community-grounded safety planning into the campus context. After the workshop is complete, W2A will compile the input from the workshop and will be made available to participants and our general membership for future use. URL: From dkoerber at brocku.ca Mon Sep 11 15:16:26 2023 From: dkoerber at brocku.ca (Duncan Koerber) Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2023 21:16:26 +0000 Subject: [acc-cca-l] Call for Chapters: Exploring the Social Media Crisis [University of Toronto Press] Message-ID: [?EXTERNAL] CALL FOR CHAPTERS for Edited Collection on the Culture of the Social Media Crisis Authors are invited to contribute chapters to an upcoming edited collection on crisis communication and social media: The Culture of the Social Media Crisis: Causes, Impact, Consequences. The book?s chapters will explore the cultural rise in prominence of the social media crisis, its unique characteristics, and its place in the broader academic field of crisis communication. This book project is under contract with University of Toronto Press and is anticipated to be published in 2025. Social media crises have caught organizations, prominent and everyday people, and public relations practitioners off-guard despite crisis communication being a subject of academic study for many decades. In recent years, we have seen a surge in social media crises, with controversies ranging from celebrity scandals to political conflicts to public health debates. Controversial posts are causing organizations to spend considerable resources dealing with social media threats to their reputations and, ultimately, bottom lines. High-profile individuals face mobs of users?some real, some bots?who demand real-world consequences for Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram posts that they don?t like. Even everyday people face reputational damage and job loss from social media posts that offend some group of social media users somewhere in the world. This edited collection will explore the nature, characteristics, and consequences of this new kind of crisis that originates on social media platforms. While crises in the ?real world? involving bodies, products, or the natural environment have been studied extensively, online crises rooted in language, image, and video remain relatively unexplored as a cultural phenomenon. Yet these situations can also cause significant damage to images, reputations, operations, and livelihoods. The editor seeks chapters that examine case studies and apply or develop theoretical approaches to understand what makes the social media crisis unique. In addition to the academic field of crisis communication proper, the editor welcomes perspectives from various disciplines, including but not limited to communication studies, cultural studies, management, political science, law, sociology, psychology, healthcare, and media studies. The following list offers possible topics to consider; however, it is by no means an exhaustive one, and submissions are welcomed on any aspect that falls within the scope of this book: * Online political divides, polarization, and tribalism * Conditions for the emergence of the social media crisis * How a paracrisis turns into a crisis * Public health/pandemic social media crises * Online debates over meaning and language that lead to a crisis * The role of bots in fomenting crisis situations * Old tweets that cause new problems * User attention to problematic social media content * Comparisons between the social media crisis and the offline crisis * The role of online mobs in crisis formation * The place of social media algorithms in online crisis development * Social media crises and the erosion of institutional trust * The debate over online cancel culture * Online outrage and crisis * The real-life consequences of social media crises (reasonable or too much?) * Legal, regulatory, and ethical implications * The discursive nature (text, image, video) * The influence of social media crises on public perceptions and opinions * The role of social media influencers * Artificial intelligence in faking online crisis situations (Midjourney, ChatGPT etc.) This edited collection will provide new directions for researchers and emphasize recent case studies to illuminate theory. Please submit a CV and a chapter proposal of about 500 words to the editor, Duncan Koerber, at dkoerber at brocku.ca by December 15, 2023. Proposals should explain the overall argument or point of the chapter, describe the case(s) to be examined, outline the chapter?s sections, and explain the chapter?s connection to crisis communication theories and/or prior research. Authors will be notified of proposal acceptance by February 1, 2024. Full chapters of about 6000 words (excluding references) will be due by June 1, 2024. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... You can download it here: https://www.aupress.ca/books/120316-how-to-read-like-you-mean-it/. This book opens where my last book ends (The Art of Communication in a Polarized World, also published by Athabasca). That book was concerned with how we change people?s minds, closing with the observation that we must open ourselves to the possibility that other people might change our minds, too. Hence my new book, which asks how we do this. How do we open ourselves to ideas that scare us because we don?t understand them? I wrote this book in part to explore the weird ways metaphor works -- how its impossible literal meaning opens readers up to its figurative meaning, which we can explore but not pin down. I address the book like a letter to my students, especially those who give up when a reading frustrates them, when in fact that frustration is the starting point for dialectical thinking, rather than the more instrumental mode of reading they seem to prefer. (I wrote this book during the first part of the Covid-19 pandemic, and if you read between the lines, it's also a book about isolation and loss.) And if anyone is in Ottawa on the evening of Sept. 28, the Spaniel?s Tale bookstore in Hintonburg will be hosting a book launch. The Department of Communication Arts, located in a research-intensive university, is committed to program objectives (https://uwaterloo.ca/communication-arts/about-our-department) providing students with lifelong capacities 1) to examine agency and implication; 2) to support the development of critical and creative competencies; and 3) to encourage a language and imagination for the public good. The department has undergraduate programs in Communication Studies, Communication Arts & Design Practice, and Theatre & Performance, and a minor in Digital Arts Communication open to students across the university. These attractive and growing programs currently serve approximately 200 majors and 150 minors, and the department is in the process of proposing a practice-based graduate MA program. In addition, the Department delivers approximately 130 sections of communication courses to students from several different programs at the University. Presently these sections are offered to students in the Faculties of Science, Engineering, and Math. The successful candidate will have a PhD in a research field such as Communication, Informatics, Design, Digital Humanities, or a related field, a strong research agenda, potentially combined with a practitioner profile, and demonstrated excellence in teaching. In particular, the successful candidate will be able to teach DAC 309 (User Experience Design) as well as other Digital Arts Communication courses such as DAC 201 (Designing Digital Media), and DAC 305 (Designing and Evaluating Digital Games). A demonstrated pedagogical commitment to theoretically-informed practice, student-centered learning, and engagement of broad public concerns is required. We are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in critical humanistic and design approaches to user experience (UX). This includes approaches to user-centered research and design based on principles of anti-racism, feminism, inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility to interrogate the perspectives, assumptions, methods, and artifacts of UX Design. Candidates with expertise in critical race, Indigenous, dis/ability, trans, feminist, queer, sustainable, and/or Marxist methods and approaches to the practice and study of UX Design specifically and critical digital design more broadly are preferred. Approaches to digital media arts and production as communication are especially welcome, as is having a high degree of technological literacy, the ability to secure external funding, collaborative potential with other faculty across the department and university, the ability to engage in outreach activities with industry in their area, and the ability to contribute to the growth of the department. The salary range for this position at the rank of Assistant Professor is $95,000.00 to $125,000.00. Duties include research, teaching, and academic service. The closing date for applications is December 15, 2023. Application materials must be submitted as PDF files through the Online Faculty Application System (https://ofas.uwaterloo.ca/). Application materials should identify how the candidate?s teaching, research and service aligns with the Department?s program objectives (see above) and advances equity, anti-racism, decolonization, and inclusion. Please include electronic copies of a cover letter (addressed to Dr. Grit Liebscher, Interim Chair, Communication Arts), curriculum vitae, research statement (1-2 pages), statement of teaching effectiveness (1-2 pages) with additional teaching evidence (e.g. 1-2 examples of syllabi, small selection of course evaluations), and a sample of a publication/creative work or work in progress. Proposals received by 1 October 2023 will receive full consideration, and acceptance results will be sent out in December 2023. Among other information, the form will ask for the following: * A short biography for all the participating speakers. * An abstract for your presentation that will appear in the conference program if your presentation is accepted. * A list of your required A/V equipment and details (title, date, length, etc.) for any media you will be presenting. We welcome presentations in a wide range of formats, including the following: * Report or Paper Presentation: Fully prepared papers/reports of 15 minutes that will be grouped with cognate presentations on the panel, with time for Q&A. * Panel: A 50-minute session consisting of a panel of three to four individuals who discuss a variety of theories or perspectives on the given topic. Panels are up to 40 minutes of presentation with 10 minutes of Q&A. * Show-and-Tell: A 10-minute short presentation of a case study or archival material with 5 minutes of Q&A. * Roundtable Discussion: A 50-minute session of informal presentations on a general subject area. (TIFF) Deadline for submissions: 1 October 2023 2024 Conference Theme: Building Alliances (A)rchival endeavors should not be about documenting the past, nor even about imagining the future?but about building a liberatory now. The poster image will be posted on the conference website. Posters are scheduled five per session slot, and all poster presenters are required to participate in the live Q&A during their session. * Evening Screenings: A film program or feature film with a short introduction. We may discuss with presenters appropriate alteration of a proposed format or duration when this makes curatorial sense for the programme as a whole. We will consider a number of live or recorded video presentations for those who may be unable to or who choose not to travel. Please direct any questions you may have about your proposal or the submission process to globalarchiving at gmail.com. Proposal Submission Form: https://forms.gle/pcveiADtgP7qvLBC7 Travel Grant Program We have established a limited number of travel grants for speakers at the Global Audiovisual Archiving Conference.
