Please see the call below. CFP: Digital Feminist Activisms: The Performances and Practices of Online Public Assemblies (http://www.qcollaborative.com/2019/04/12/cfp-digital-feminist-activisms-the-performances-and-practices-of-online-public-assemblies/) Edited Collection Abstracts Due: May 30, 2019 Editors: Dr. Shana MacDonald (University of Waterloo), Dr. Milena Radzikowska (Mount Royal University), Dr. Michelle MacArthur (University of Windsor), Brianna I. Wiens (York University) With the rise of what Jessalyn Keller and Maureen Ryan have called ?emergent feminism,? we are witnessing a moment marked by the ?sudden reappearance? of strident critiques of gendered inequalities within popular discourse (2018, 2). More often than not, emergent feminisms are amplified online through social media by popular feminism and celebrity endorsements (Sarah Banet-Weiser 2018; Angela McRobbie 2008), which can problematically promote neoliberal values of individual consumer practices and competitive self-improvement as a forms of empowerment. And yet, access to social media has produced important and critical forms of feminist politics. In Notes Towards a Theory of Performative Assembly, Judith Butler (2015) advances the importance of bodies assembling in space as a form of protest that performatively asserts both ?the right to appear? and demands ?a livable life? for those in positions of precarity. While feminist visibility in the broader public eye has produced important dialogues, this politics of assembly simultaneously begs the question: ?What about those who prefer not to appear, who engage in their democratic activism in another way?? (Butler 2015, 55). There are many valid and powerful reasons as to why feminist activists may want, or be able, to not appear given the dangerous climate of online spaces, rife with the violent misogyny of trolling culture. These forms of publicness and erasure are equally important to consider within current considerations of emergent feminist practices online. This book seeks to gather provocations, analyses, creative explorations, and/or cases studies of digital feminist practices from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives including, but not limited to, media studies, communication studies, critical and cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies, performance studies, digital humanities, feminist HCI, and feminist STS. The book frames digital feminisms as forms of public assembly that are performative and theatrical; that is, performative in that they can offer, ?a process, a praxis, an episteme, a mode of transmission, an accomplishment, and a means of intervening in the world? (Diana Taylor 2003, 15), and theatrical in that they are events that may include characters, plot, the invocation of an audience, and the collective labour of multiple collaborators. In this way, digital feminist practices foster counterpublics??communities that enable ?exchanges...distinct from authority? that ?have a critical relation to power? (Michael Warner 2002, 56). This book seeks to consider how digital feminist activism uses conventions of assembly, performativity, theatricality, and design to counter the individualizing forces of postfeminist neoliberalism while foregrounding the types of systemic change so greatly needed, but often overlooked, in this climate. List of possible topics: * Feminist hashtag activism; feminist, anti-racist, decolonial, LGBTQ+ hashtag movements * Closed virtual feminist communities and safe(r) spaces * Feminist and post-feminist forms of digital culture * Intersectional feminism online * LGBTQ+ digital cultures * Black, indigenous, and people of colour (BIPOC) digital cultures * Transnational digital feminism * Popular and celebrity feminism online * Feminist responses to online misogyny * Feminism and post-feminism on Instagram and/or Twitter * Feminist, queer, and BIPOC meme * Feminist, queer, and BIPOC design * Gamergate and implications of online misogyny in game culture * Methodological and/or theoretical approaches to feminist digital culture Please submit a 250-350 word abstract, a brief author bio, and any questions to Brianna I. Wiens (bwiens@yorku.ca (mailto:bwiens@yorku.ca)) by May 30th, 2019. Accepted submissions should be 6000-7000 words and will be due to the editors by November 1, 2019. Best RB Re - [Generating, Creating, Interpreting] Conversations about Life We live in strange times. We mourn for the countless lives we are losing to extinction, famine, severe weather and disease; we celebrate the possibility that science may assist us in preserving what we have and in regenerating what is no more. We aspire to re-create long gone species and proceed to create new one. Biotechnologies both terrify and invigorate us. We are torn between creating risk free futures and taking exciting Promethean risks. We claim that biotech can create a more democratic society; yet, we are increasingly racist, sexist and classist. What?s at stake? How can life unfold from here? How do we reinterpret and re-imagine it? Join us for a series of brief presentations and a following juicy discussion. ISTR and the Conference Founded in 1992, ISTR is a global community of scholars, policymakers, and third sector leaders dedicated to the creation, discussion, and advancement of knowledge pertaining to the Third Sector and its impact on civil society, public policy and local communities. Civil society plays a crucial part in promoting cosmopolitan ideals of collective responsibility, global citizenship, tolerance, inclusivity, and sustainability. These ideals are increasingly important in a divided, less tolerant, and uncertain world in which States erect physical and legal barriers in order to exclude outsiders, in which governments erode citizenship rights and welfare entitlements, in which leading politicians openly challenge independent institutions such as universities and the free press, and in which disinterested expertise and authority are assailed by populist forces. These are issues of global and ubiquitous importance but they provoke civil society initiatives which take various forms and which operate at all geographical scales, from social movements and alliances of NGOs that cross borders and continents, to small-scale initiatives to relieve destitution and promote solidarity. The conference call invites proposals that respond to these broad themes. If we consider various dimensions of intolerance we can see crucial roles for civil society in relation to: 1. Sustainability: intolerance and self-interest extends to scepticism about climate change and the associated environmental degradation. Voluntary action has often been referred to as an ?essential renewable resource? for social development; civil society groups play essential roles in raising awareness of environmental issues and developing innovative responses to them. 2. Diversity: in a globalised world, diverse social groups are brought into proximity on a previously unknown scale, provoking social tensions and challenging the solidarity, which underpins the welfare state. There is a crucial role for the third sector and civil society here, in promoting global citizenship and creating social innovations through which diverse groups are brought together and the needs of strangers are met. This includes diversity in all its forms and it includes initiatives that promote a range of social solidarities across boundaries of class, disability, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, and sexual orientation. 3. Expertise and authority: intolerance encompasses a radical scepticism about independent expertise and civil society plays a central role in challenging this. It does so by providing authoritative expertise and advocacy, particularly on behalf of minority causes and groups, and offering a bulwark against fake news. 4. Social innovation and welfare: in this unpromising and intolerant context, civil society organisations play crucial roles as sources of welfare and social innovation, often being on the front line of responding to immediate needs (e.g. destitution), and in providing novel solutions in circumstances in which the state has withdrawn from previously-accepted responsibilities. Paper, poster, and panel proposals from around the world are invited in response to the overall conference focus as they relate to the many, diverse and interconnected theme areas that are characteristic of third sector research. For the purposes of the ISTR International Conference, the third sector is broadly defined, including: NGOs, non?profit organizations, voluntary associations, social economy organizations, community organizations, self?help and mutual organizations, civil society organizations, foundations, philanthropy, and other manifestations of civil society globally and locally, for example networks and social forums, unions, religious organizations, co?operatives, and volunteering. The focus of the 2020 conference We welcome papers which consider the roles of NGOs, third sector and civil society organizations, broadly defined, in relation to the following themes, but proposals related to other topics are also encouraged: * Civil Society, State and Markets in Democratic Contexts * Challenges and Opportunities of Advocacy and Campaigning in an Era of ?Fake News? * Governance, Management, Adaptation and Sustainability of Organizations * Hybridity, Legitimacy and the Third Sector * Models of Philanthropy and Voluntarism * Social Movements and Political Participation in Authoritarian and Austere Times * Development and Sustainability: The Role of Civil Society * Diversity, Inequalities and Civil Society * Social Economy, Social Innovation and the Third Sector * Emerging Areas of Theory, Pedagogy and Practice General Information Forms of Participation: Papers, Panels, Roundtable, and Posters Contributions may take the form of a paper, a panel, a roundtable, or a poster. Please indicate your choice of presentation when you submit your abstract. Abstract Submissions To be considered for review, an abstract of not more than 500 words must include: * A statement of the empirical or theoretical concern. * A short summary locating the concern within a wider literature. * A concise account of the empirical or theoretical methodological approach. * The main arguments of the paper and an indication of the supporting evidence. * A statement of the main conclusions and their relevance to an international audience. References are not included in the 500-word count and can be listed in the ?Additional Information? section of the online submission portal. Abstracts not meeting these requirements will be declined by the ISTR Conference Committee. Sample abstracts are available for review on our conference web page. Please note: Abstracts will be accepted in both English and French. The primary language of the conference is English, however, to welcome local participation, there will be some panels conducted in French. Submissions for Panels, Papers and Posters All panel, papers and poster proposals for the Conference must be submitted using ISTR?s online submission service. You will be required to choose one of the conference themes which best fits your abstract. To submit your paper or poster abstract using this service, go to the ISTR website ? www.istr.org/Montreal - and follow the link for ?Submit a Proposal.? Special Note on Panel Submissions A panel submission is a proposal for a coordinated set of papers (usually 3 or 4 in number) on a particular topic or issue. Please note that panel proposals require an abstract identifying and justifying the theme of the panel as well as a full abstract for each panel paper. Panel proposals that do not include full abstracts and author information for each paper will not be considered. The person submitting the panel proposal must be willing to act as the panel coordinator and ensure that all proposed paper presenters commit to attending the conference. Please note that papers which are part of a submitted panel cannot be submitted separately as an individual submission. If the submission is submitted twice by the same author it will be rejected. Special Note on Posters and Poster Submissions A poster proposal is an alternative to presenting a full research paper. New researchers in particular are invited to share work-in-progress by means of a poster if they wish. This is an opportunity to display a poster about completed and/or ongoing research. Posters will be displayed throughout the conference and a designated session will be scheduled in which participants can meet with authors to discuss their work. Full instructions on poster formats will be provided to those accepted for presentation. Special Note on Roundtable Submissions Roundtables encourage discussion and interaction among delegates. The roundtable format offers short (max. 10 minute) presentations around a common theme, with ample time for discussion. Proposals should include details on the theme or topic of discussion and its relevance, along with the names of the organizers/participants. Roundtables typically include no more than five (5) presenters. Please describe what each presenter is expected to contribute. Innovative roundtable formats are invited. To propose content using a new session format, please provide a description of the format and how the session will function. Then provide a description of the proposed content, including the topic(s), its relevance to the Third Sector, and the names of the organizers/presenters. Please describe how each presenter is expected to contribute. Review of Submissions All submissions will be subject to a blind review by at least two independent reviewers. Authors will be advised by the end of January 2020 whether their abstract has been accepted. ALL AUTHORS INCLUDING ALL PANELISTS MUST REGISTER FOR THE CONFERENCE BY MARCH 13, 2020, TO HAVE THEIR PRESENTATION SCHEDULED IN THE CONFERENCE PROGRAM. The completed paper must be submitted to the session moderator by June 8, 2020, to provide adequate time for moderators to read the paper and to allow for a more fulsome discussion. In addition, authors are requested to send their paper to Secretariat@istr.org by June 8, 2020, or upload via the conference website. Post-Conference Publication and Working Paper Opportunities Following the conference, authors are invited to revise their papers in the light of conference feedback with an eye to an appropriate submission to Voluntas, the peer-reviewed official journal of ISTR, or any other journals in the field. Publication decisions are the sole discretion of such journals and ISTR does not participate in the editorial decisions on such submissions. Authors can also submit their papers to be reviewed for selection for publication in the ISTR Conference Working Papers Series to be published after the conference on the ISTR website. Questions? Tues. June 4th | 10:30-12:00 Panel | MCML 166 | Canadian Association for Food Studies -- Canadian Communication Association Joint Session Myriam Durocher, Charlene Elliott, Maya Hey, Irina Mihelache (Moderated by Irena Knezevic) Critical Perspectives at the Intersection of Food and Communication Studies Food is produced, both discursively and materially, through a web of social and cultural interactions, significations and practices. As such, food and food-related practices are permeated and informed by power issues creating unfair and unequal relationships to food, and through food. Works emerging from critical food studies have demonstrated very well how the uneven power relationships get to be materialized and rendered effective through the range of various activities related, among other things, to food production and harvesting, circulation, preparation, and consumption. By conceptualizing and questioning food as a site, a practice and/or a medium or by examining the relationships that surround food or that are constituted by or through food-related activities, communication studies proves to be and insightful approach to questioning food-related issues. This panel?s four presentations are at the intersection of food and communication studies, leavening the conversation with critical perspectives coming from both fields. Mihalache?s archival research examines mid-20th century recipe competitions as both a form of agency and a site of absences and marginalization in a pre-multiculturalism Canada. Elliott examines radical transparency in food packaging the diverging strategies of government and Big Food in terms of providing health information to the public. Durocher?s research explores how power relationships and issues emerge through the ways by which we culturally define and practice what is conceived as ?healthy nutrition?. Hey examines how the applying ?just the method? of a ferment circumvents the social and ethical accountability that comes with encountering Others' (knowledge). -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm not sure this CFP has made the rounds on the CCA listserv yet. Please direct any questions to Tero Karppi (contact details below). CFP: The Ends of Social Media Symposium November 15, 2019 University of Toronto, Canada Plenary panel: M?l Hogan, University of Calgary and Rena Bivens, Carleton University Deadline for proposals: July 15, 2019 ?It is time to break up Facebook,? Chris Hughes, a co-founder of Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg?s Harvard roommate declared in the New York Times. The Cambridge Analytica revelations of 2018 finally changed the collective climate around social media and raised a tide of criticism. Social media is no longer conceived as a neutral platform where people come together to collaborate and build communities. Rather, it allows structural exploitation of different users and the production of their desires and needs. Social media sites are seen as entities whose goal is to make money and the critics argue that reaching this end happens with collateral damages to people, environment, infrastructure, societies, and democracy. Social media platforms have become global powers, and arguments have been made that we need to put an end to this before it is too late; we need to regulate these platforms and even break them apart. The project of the Ends of Social Media symposium is to think what are the current ends of social media; who are end users and to what ends are they useful; what does the wiring of the planet not only metaphorically but also materially from cables to satellites to data centers mean; is there a visible end for the dominance of social media in our lives; and how does social media end and what comes after? The Ends of Social Media is a one-day event organized on November 15, 2019, at the University of Toronto. The plenary speakers for the event are M?l Hogan, University of Calgary and Rena Bivens, Carleton University. The idea of this symposium is to bring together an interdisciplinary group of researchers, thinkers, and artists to discuss, examine and speculate on the ends of social media. The notion of the end is taken here in its plurality of meanings: the final, furthest, or most extreme part; terminal point; a goal or result that one seeks to achieve; and an ultimate state or condition. Collectively, we are seeking new ways to understand social media by approaching it from these ends rather than its beginnings or focusing on its means. We invite papers that discuss the theme of the Ends of Social Media from theoretical, empirical, and experimental perspectives. The potential topics for discussion include (but are not limited to): ? Social media criticism ? Social media monopolies ? Social media dystopias/utopias ? Environmental costs of social media ? Burnouts, fadeaways, and disconnections of social media ? Social ends and the ends of the social ? The instrumental and intrinsic value of social media ? Hate, injustice, oppression and other ends of social media ? Social media alternatives and the centers for humane technology ? AI, weapons of math destruction, and social media ? Politics, social media, and the end of democracy ? Breakdowns, failures, accidents, and social media ? War, death, social media, and the end We invite proposals for individual papers including abstracts (250 words) and a short bio (100 words). Proposals should be sent to endsofsocialmedia@protonmail.com by July 15th, 2019. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by August 15, 2019. There are on-going negotiations with publishers about an anthology based on the papers presented in this symposium. The symposium is free of charge. The symposium is sponsored by the Jackman Humanities Institute Program for Arts, University of Toronto. Book reviews are vital to the life of books. Joseph Mackin, an author and avid book reviewer, likens the publication of any book to the proverbial silent tree falling in the forest. It is the reviewer's task, he contends, to acknowledge that the tree fell, and to share with the world the sound it made when it hit the ground. We welcome short reviews (1000-1250 words) of recently published books on topics that align with our focus on Canadian and international contemporary art, culture, and theory. At this point in time, reviews don't have to be explicitly related to an issue's theme, but should be in line with PUBLIC's interdisciplinary focus. Please send expressions of interest to me, Sara Swain, at sara.swain@gmail.com with the subject line "book review" and include your name and a brief bio, as well as the title, author, and publisher of the book you would like to review. In addition, we currently have copies of Diversity Counts: Gender, Race, and Representation in Canadian Art Galleries by Anne Dymond, and Tear Gas: Protest, Culture, Museums by Kristy Robertson which would love to be reviewed! If anyone is interested in writing reviews of these for PUBLIC, please let me know and I will happily make arrangements to get the books to you. University of Toronto, October 3, 2019 The International Network on Digital Labour is an association of scholars working on the different aspects of the relation between work and digital technology. In its desire to integrate young scholars and foster collaborations with senior members, the network has launched a first series of graduate colloquia to take place during its 2019 events. The 1st INDL colloquium was part of the conference "Microwork platforms" that we organized in Paris in June. This second call for participants aims to select papers to be presented during a workshop on "Robots and Labour" that will take place at the University of Toronto on October 3rd. The colloquium will welcome all graduate students (master's & PhD) in different stages of their research who work on the many aspects of computer-mediated work, platform economies, online value production, automation, robotics, and tech-enabled outsourcing. It aims to give junior researchers the chance to interact with other scholars working in similar areas of interest, and discuss their current projects, methodological issues and receive advice on the thesis writing process and career prospects. Please note that, while the registration to the colloquium is free, the network cannot provide funding for travel or accommodation in Toronto. The following is a non-exhaustive list of topics: * labour and robotics * the gig economy * work in the sharing economy * the gendered and racialized nature of digital labour * technology and precarious labour * automation and labour * platform capitalism * freelancing * data as labour * social media and labour * online content creation * playbour * platform co-operativism * technology and the commons * cultures of digital work Participation in the colloquium is limited. Interested applicants should prepare a two-page summary of their current project that indicate their research context, hypotheses or research questions, methods, issues, progress to date, and a brief statement indicating their interest in the colloquium. These documents should be addressed to julian.posada@mail.utoronto.ca. Key dates Deadline for submission: July 19, 2019 Acceptance notification: From July 31, 2019 Colloquium: October 3, 2019 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Conference follows the staging of previous WIM conferences in Glasgow (2016) and Lausanne (2018) and the establishment of the Network (https://wim.hypotheses.org/). WIM was launched in Lausanne in 2018 and has been established by scholars interested in the historical and contemporary nature of working in music. It has adopted the following Statement of Purpose: ?Working in Music is an international research network. Our purpose is to conduct and disseminate innovative research about all aspects of what it means to work in music. We aim to understand music as work through economic, sociocultural, political, legal and historical lenses, and to explore working conditions and experiences across genres and divisions of labour. Our approach is multidisciplinary and endeavours to forge connections between academic disciplines through shared interests in music and work. Our network developed from and is centred on a biennial conference in which scholars meet to exchange and debate issues and ideas. We are also committed to working with musicians, practitioners and music industries personnel?. Following Ruth Finnegan, it is possible to say that one of the noticeable aspects of musical work, is that the work is often hidden. The hours that are taken to master an instrument are hidden from the public, the musicians who make recordings and perform live are often hidden behind the ?stars?, the ways musicians find work and work with other musicians and music intermediaries are often hidden, and the vast majority of working musicians remain anonymous. Meanwhile those working behind the scenes in areas such as publishing, live music, artists? management and recording largely remain similarly unknown as well as the ways they make music and musical careers happen. But music only happens because work is put in and it is this context that we issue this Call for Papers. We invite proposals for papers which address ? either historically or in the contemporary context - one or more of the following themes: Musicians? working lives and practices Employment practices and working conditions within the music industries Musicians and other musical workers? representative organisations The effect of intermediaries ? such as agents, managers, promoters, journalists etc ? on musicians? working conditions and careers Collaborations between musicians and non-musicians in getting music made, played or publicised Intellectual property, labour law and other axes of musical labour Discrimination and inequality in musical labour and employment Musical labour and employment in specific genres of music Musical labour and changing technology (including musical labour in the digital age) Online ?platforms? as new intermediaries or systems of surveillance Musicians? working lives in orchestras, bands and other ensembles Musicians? collaborative networking practices which allow work it be done and increase its visibility Musical labour and creativity Music and the labour movement Touring and working in music Non-musicians working in music Musicians as employers Proposals Paper proposals are invited on these topics - and on any other issue relevant to Working in Music. WIM is a deliberately broad-based network and so proposals will be welcomed from any perspective, using any methodology and addressing any kind of music at any historical juncture. Please note that papers should last for 20 minutes and the conference organisers will require chairs to ensure that presenters keep to this limit.
